I originally purchased a Browning 300 Win. Mag. bolt action rifle, thinking I could use it for just about any type of game. But after talking to several people, I'm wondering how multipurpose the caliber really is. I was planning on usingthisgun for the upcoming deer season, but from what I hear, thecaliber is a little too muchfor the local deer here. The main reason I purchased it though, was for hunting biggame up north (moose, elk, grizzley, etc.) But after looking at various large game calibers, mine is the weakest one on the list. Making methink that it's over poweredfor deer and under powered for biggame. Does anyone out there have personal experience with this caliber and taking down moose, elk, bear, etc?
Thanks,
David
P.S. Am I in the right forum? I couldn't find one for ammuntion.
Is it enough for elk, moose, and bear? YES!
Is it too much for deer? No. More than needed, of course, but then it seems most folk use more than needed these days for deer.
Actually, IMO, the 300Win.Mag. is more than needed for elk and moose too. For deer, elk, moose, etc., all you really need is most any standard cartridge such as 270Win., 280Rem., 308Win., or
30-06.
Figuring LARGE bears I'd want more than any .30cal. magnum can offer. I'd be looking to 338Win.Mag. or even a 375H&H. Have to admit though, the 300 magnums seem to handle most situations ok.
Have fun with it, and quit worrying about what others might think.
That's their problem.
