West Nile is not a joke.
It's the way it's spreading and the number of people that have contracted it compared to last year that scares people so much. I don't remember the exact numbers but the first year like 18 people died in ny. Year to date 80 people have died. What will it be like when it's spread around the country? That's what scares people.
In Minnesota West Nile was first detected only 4 or 5 months ago (if that). 3 horses from the WMCA in my home town have died plus another nearby and more in the town I live in now.
Here's a link to the current confirmed case count:
http://www.cdc.gov/od/oc/media/wncount.htm
According to the CDC on August 8, 2002 there were 113 confirmed human cases with 5 deaths. September 18, 2002....1641 human cases with 80 deaths. That's a JOKE?
As far as the shark attacks I think the problem there was one large school of sharks attacking a lot of people in a relatively small area. Which made it more dangerous to swim in that particular area. Overall numbers may have been down.
