Default RE: dogs vs coon

Yes my dog has had a few run in's with coons. Look at the "has your dog ever" thread and read my #2 story. The oldest dog is a 55lb GSP and could handle his own when he was younger. He still can, as that story was just 2 years ago when he was 7yrs but i get a little worried now that he's older and his teeth are duller, especially since he can be a trouble maker at times. I've gotten lucky (as well as my older dog) when it comes to him and coons b/c I know guys who coon hunt and have had their coons dog get their throats or bellies slashed open by a wounded coon. Not good.

Also, a pack of coons is really bad. My dad had a GSP years ago that got in a tangle with 3 coons and the fight eventually worked it's way into their pond. One coon was on the dog's back and the other one was trying to get the dog's head under water. Almost drowned his GSP had my dad not gotten their in time.

If your dogs are house pets and part of the family, I honestly wouldn't turn them lose on the coon. I know that I wouldn't purposely turn my dogs lose on one and would do anything to avoid it.
