Actually, gophers are a lot different than prairie dogs. Gophers are smaller, darker in color, solitary, with small hairless legs, and have short hairless tails much like a rat's. They are nocturnal in nature, and generally don't venture outside of their burrows. Prairie dogs on the other hand, are communal as opposed to solitary, living in symbiotic groups as large as 100, and prefer daylight hours. They are more squat and have a slight banding. So overall, prairie dogs are essentially overgrown short-tailed ground squirrels, and gophers are hotdog shaped long-tailed hamsters, lol. Hope that helps.
