I have 49 rounds of the buffalo sabots given to me by my father in law in the 225 grains. He's had this box of rounds for 10-15 years. He only shot one deer with them but he said the bullet left a hole in the deer that you could put a baseball thru, and that I should use the pellets. He is still trying to push the pellets on me as though they were the "it" for muzzleloading. Personally, I like using the loose powder to determine my exact load combo. For one reason or another he has given up ML hunting. Thats another story though.
My question is, how well will a 225 grain sabot (buffalo bullet) take down a deer and with what powder combo should I start with. I fired it one time and used a 110 grains of BM3. Although there was a lot of smoke and took about 10 minutes for me to see my target

I was wondering if there is a charge that I should start with. I will be using this round out of my Omega and CVA Buckhorn. (both .50 cal)
In archery and hunting (ML) I believe that heavier is always better than light and faster.
Maybe I'm wrong as these two hunting styles are for the most part different.
