RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

Way to go Rockby, now we're in business on Team 24!

I've heard one gobble a day in the past two weeks here. This weekend is the last of the season and I'm hoping to get another and one for my son. Our sesason ends next Friday, so they need to get to moving and gobbling or else I'm only gonna have enough for a couple sandwiches. I can't believe the first weekend of the season we were surrounding by gobbling and haven't seen or heard a thing for weeks.

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

hey team, Sorry but I was unsuccessful opening day. I heard 7 different birds but i also heard two shots:(. I had a bird about 120 yds away but he was with a hen. it was kinda cool though, i would call and she would mimic me then the tom would gobble. This happened 8 times in a 20 min period. I was hoping to bring the hen in looking for a fight and the tom would follow.
I wont be able to go again til sunday morning...wish me luck!

Another crappy, windy, rainy weekend here in Kansas. [:@] Saw a couple hens, but that was it. It's supposed to rain all week, so hopefully that means nice weather this weekend! I've got an itchy release finger! :)

How did everyone else fair this weekend?

vmartin -- How was the hunting in Manhattan? Hopefully better than here in SE Kansas!

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

the weather was terrible, bad wind, rain, hot and muggy. it was very hard hunting this weekend. i hardly ever found a tom that could be called in.

we ended up having to use prescouted patterns and off beat tactics and stalking to get our birds, but somehow we came through. in total we killed 3 rio grande turkeys and 6 eastern turkeys. one tom weighed 25.5 pounds, another weighed 23 pounds, both had 1.25" spurs and 10 inch beards. one of the toms, his beard was unique as it wasthick as a broomand split in 2 directions.
i hope the weather is good this next weekend.

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

congrats vmartin on your turkeys i went out yesturday and had a cuple of good size toms take and gobble at my call and then a hen came out and then thats when the figt broke out between them and then i watched and see if they will come my way or the other way well to puta long story short they went the other way afther fighting for about 2 hours on and off and then some one came in and scard them off so i gave up and came home and tried this morring and see if i can get them to come back out in to the field

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

i like to watch them fighting dh1984, some times it is pretty comical to watch thier matrix kicks and stuff. friday was the one good morning for us and we watched one big tom fight 9 jakes away from a bunch of hens. the big tom breed atleast 4 hens in front of us, this went on from fly down untill 11:00. then things got too hot and the turkeys started to hide under trees to stay cool.

dh1984 04-28-2009 08:22 AM

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

yea i know its really comical to watch them fight but i wish i can take and got atleast one of them this morring but i'll get him one day when i go out again

Nice birds OntElk! I'm glad someone is having better luck than me. The only birds I've been seeing besides my decoys are the ones I see on my way to work in the mornings and those have been pretty scarce lately. I'm blaming it on the rain.

Went out Sunday afternoon to hunt a couple new spots and surprise surprise....it rained. Just a little bit, but it still rained. Then it cleared off to be nice and sunny late in the afternoon. Still didn't see anything though. :(

I'm beginning to think my hunting buddy is bad luck.....(but don't tell him that!) :)

I have to eat crow however because I missed congratulating other team members. I checked the standing and I see there is 4 other birds from our team been killed.

CONGRATS! I imagine it is somewhere back in the 24 pages of responses but I'll just throw out a "good job" to whoever tagged so far.

Go get 'em team.

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

I haven't checked up in a while guys. My season ended on the 1st and I have to say that while it wasn't a dissappointment, I was a little let down. Started strong with the bird the first Saturday, but after the first weekend we didn't really see or hear much. To top it off, I pulled up about 6:30pm past the house to the area I hunt in to check and make sure anyone wasn't hiding up there, and there were five jakes standing less than 30yds from the truck. They didn't even bother to run, they just stood there for a minute or so and walked away slowly. What a whopper of a way to end a season. But, all isn't lost, at least now we can pull out the Honda motorcycles and the four wheeler and ride the roads, trails and woods without worrying about scaring away any game.

Here's hoping we come out on top......I'll drink one for the team!!

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

Well....I still don't have any pictures to post. :( But, we do have a good story to tell.

Here's how it went down. I couldn't have done a better job retelling it. Mind you....once again, it rained. I think I'm just going to have to get used to turkey hunting in the rain.

ORIGINAL: BetterBirddogs

Went out on Sunday early afternoon to a new spot that looks awesome. We're walking in and we spook a hen off the field. We keep going and get setup. (girlfriend want to set up right where we spooked the hen, that's important in a second) So we continue on down the corner of the field. We get set up and wait about 20 minutes and I call a little bit. A hen comes out about 300 yards to our west (left cuz we're facing NW). We then look up and there are some hens coming into the field about 400 yards on the other side of it. Then Rhonda looks NE and sees a big tom strutting (came out right where she wanted to sit ofcourse). He struts his way across the corn to the hens and then hes hung up. He struts in the same place for 2 hours so we decide to put the sneak on him. We abandoned ship and headed west down through a creek. We stopped to check on our boy periodically and he's still just strutting away in the same spot. We get all the way around and we start our way north on the last leg of the stalk and I crawl out the edge to get a visual. Well he's moved and he's strutting right to us!. I get Rhonda set up with the gun and the wait is on. After about 20 minutes and no turkeys moving through the trees we were in I decided to poke my head and get a look. Well we had a hen about 10 yards left of us and she putts and goes back out into the open. I continue to get to my knees to get a look and there's our boy about 20 yards away strutting facing away from us. How perfect right? Well I cluck at him a couple times and he gobbles instantly. I have Rhonda crawl up to me and I stand her up slowly behind this huge tree and tell her to get ready. I am on my knees next to her and she is set up. I cluck at him and he turns and struts straight into our laps. She tells me she's gonna wait for him to turn and then he does just like I scripted it. She's on him and she shoots! Clean miss at 20 yards.[:@] She hands the gun to me and I crawl out the edge and there he is at about 45 yards. Long shot with a 20 guage but I let one fly and he and he haram take off and go into the trees. Great hunt though. She cried all the way back to the blind. She is spoiled by success and has never missed to date. She'll get one.
Now we put a sneak on this tom that would make anyone jealous. And I came up empty handed. :( And dissapointed and mad.So, back to the house we wentso I could drown my sorrows in agallon of chocolate ice cream and grilled pork chops. ;)

Sigh.....there is always next weekend.

You are right dh1984, there is always next weekends, but the next weekends are quickly running out! Season ends here on May 31st. Is anyone else on our team still hunting?? I know vmartin is because he is in Kansas too.

After working Saturday morning and doing the family thing for a graduation in the afternoon, I'll be back at in on Sunday morning. I'm on a mission now to shoot that stinking tom I missed last week!

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

well I didn't increase the score of my biggest bird . Instead I actually walked away from a longbeard to go kill a jake. :DWell a little more to it than that but in essence that's what happened. I had to go to the washroom real bad and so I left the gobbler. The night before I had an encounter with the jake on the roadside. He flew up into a pine tree right at the road edge on a front lawn. I tried to bust him over into the bush so I could hunt him the next morning if need be. Instead he turned and flew back across the road to another yard and then gobbled away at us. I told my buddy that I knew where he would eventually end up later in the morning and I might just have to go kill his arse for being so cheaky to us :D

8:50am he was 20 yds and got his payback.

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

i shot my bird this weekend, i will have to upload photos when i get home tonight.

this weekend was pretty good. i ended up killing my tom after spotting approx. 12 toms out in a corn field in 3 different groups. it was a hot day so they sat on the edge of the river in the shade. my buddy and i snuck a long ways through the river to come up out of the river right next to one group.

eastern turkey
23 pounds
1-5/8", and 1-1/2" spur
12" beard length.
total score: 67.5
