RE: TEAM 24 - CHECK IN! NEW!!!
Okay guys, this is the bird and story. Woke up late, about 5:10am because my Blackberry is my alarm and it's only set to go off on weekdays. Finally got out right about first light and didn't need the flashlight for help. I put out a submissive hen, standing hen and full strut gobbler for dekes and got in the blind. They started sounding off all around me about 15 minutes later and kept going for almost an hour or so while I called on and off, nothing came in the entire time. Everything stopped for a time and about 8am I heard a few jakes gobbling behind me across the road and just hit the slate a few times to see if one would come in. Around 8:30 I hit the slate, scratched twice and suddenly one blasted me from about thirty yards dead ahead. He came in through the brush that's about waist high, so I couldn't see him at all. I was laid back in the chair, legs crossed and no gun in hand. He hit it hard so I cut the yelping and tried to pick up my gun with as little movement as possible. I don't think he could see the dekes through the brush and was just coming blind to the calling. He popped his long neck up and started bobbing around looking for a hen and gave himself away. Two steps to his right, and one head poke later he was doing the flop.
Weight 19.5 Beard 8.5 Spurs 1" and 1.25" Your score is 19.5 + 10 + 12.5 + 17 = 59 Not as big as the two last year, but he's good for a start. |

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
thats great martin hope yo get one to come in. i got my call today and i'm gooin out this afther noon and see what i get to come in today
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
Took my son hunting Sunday morning and had two jakes come in within about 40yds then move right on by. I think the strutting deke had a little to do with them leaving. I'd have taken one to put meat in the freezer, but I wasn't going to let him shoot 40yds with his 20ga that you can't put a choke on. If we'd been using the jake deke they'd probably have come in to about 10yds....maybe next time.
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
i heard that beezer maybe next time your son will get one hopefully i wish him good luck on the next hunt you will never know you might get a other one too
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
This is only my third year turkey hunting. Since I changed jobs I won't get as much time in the woods as the past two, but I'm still hoping for a little better outcome. First year I only got a jake, last year I doubled up with two good gobblers in the same day so hopefully it'll increase this year. I'm looking to get five and tag out, we'll see what happens. My calling is definately improving and it seems I'm getting a little more attention from my calls. The next one in range belongs to my son though, I don't care if looks to weigh 40lbs. It's still a little tough to get him in the woods some days, but hearing gobblers answer my calls and seeing the two jakes up close sparked his enthusiasm enough that I think harvesting one will actually get him hooked.
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
lol it might will beezer i hope you tag out this year and bring in some good sized gobblers and i hope your son goes with you too to help with calling and shooting them if not you might have to shoot and call them in your self like i have too i can't get my little brother out of the house when he's home but one day i'll get him out in the woods with me lol

Man that stinks dh1984. Hope you get over that cold soon!
Went out this evening....had a bunch of birds around us, but nothing but an old hen came in to look at our decoys. Headed back out in the morning, hopefully it isn't raining. Betterbirddogs is tagged out here in Kansas, so he won't be hogging the turkeys and I'll get a shot! |

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
well....no luck here. it rained all day sunday. we sat for a little bit, saw some toms and hens feeding out in a hay field, but they weren't interested at all in coming in to our calls. dang rain. well...better luck next weekend i guess.
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
I have been having my uncle doing some scouting for me at the farm the last week. Last saturday there was a bird with about a 13'' BEARD it was on the ground he said. has seen 4 other toms and several jakes. nothing on the cameras but deer, a coyote, and 1 hen.
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
dang thats nice about the turkey with the beard hope you get a good shot at him i'm findly getting over this cold so i can go bak out tomarrow or maybe friday but i'm not 100% sure that i'll be well before then tho but i'll carry my littel brown bottle with me so i can keep from getting more sicker lol
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
last weekend we called in a couple of different toms. one came from a 1/4 mile, gobbling over and over as it came in.
another tom was called away from a hen, that was pretty cool. it took good calling by the persion i was with to aggrivate the hen into coming in close enough. the decoy setup pulled the tom away from the hen in the end. i had my hen sitting on the ground, and my jake full fan standing over to look like he was about to mount. the setup worked perfectly. |
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
hey thats cool i wished i would have seen that done lol i been loooking to get out sometime this week to go huntign again afther beening sick for the last week with a cold that was trying to nick me in the but to keep from hunting but hopefully this week end i'll get out there and go hunting and get one hopfully
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
I guess me having to work this fine Saturday morning isn't as bad as I thoughtit was going to be.....since it is storming like CRAZY here in Kansas! :(:( Dang rain! Why can't it rain during the week and then be nice on the weekends?? Of course that wouldn't make any sense, because I can't turkey hunt during the week...only on weekends. So what better time for it to rain than when I should be turkey hunting??? Sorry for the rant...I just had to complain about the RAIN!
Keep your fingers crossed that there will be NO RAIN on Sunday so I can get me a turkey! How is everyone else doing?? Any luck with the elusive tom turkey? |
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
You and Haley need to get it done! Last year it was you two that scored first whats going on this year?
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
We were just talking about that last night. You know....Haley and I felt bad that we stole the spotlight last year and decided to sit back and let you "boys" shine a little bit. We figured that was the least we could do since you guys put in all the hard work taking us hunting.
But....them's fightin' words. We're gonna BRING IT now. You better watch out! |
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
I just got the hook-up on some sweet turkey ground last night. Can't wait for it to stop raining so I can get out there!
Betterbirddogs and Yardbird78......if you are nice to me, I might even let you tag along and watch me shoot the big one! [8D] |
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
Hey Team,
Sorry but I have been working alot this week and haven't been able to post any progress. Went out Wednesday morning after working all night. Got to the farm about 8:30 and glassed 3 toms and 8 hens in the back fields. I set up about 20 yards inside the tree line where I just knew they were heading. Well wouldn't you know, them suckers decided to cut down the main path heading back towards the river. Well I made a quick dash thru the woods and and got set up just in time for them to come around the bend. I hit the slate with a couple clucks and two yelps and that was all it took. All 3 gobbled but the big tom took the lead and never looked back. I let him get about 25 yards and that was the last time he saw daylight. Eastern 21 pounds 3 ounces, 1 inch right, 1 1/8 inch left, 12 inch beard= 66.4375 I have tommorrow off so I am going to try and go out in the morning. I will try to post the pics I took from Wednesday when I get back. Good Luck and Safe Hunting! |
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
By the way, if my math is right that should take us to third place in the team standing unless someone else has not entered their bird. I guess I need to get those pics in to make it official.:D
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
congrats rockby glad you got one i'll dubble check it and make sure their right for you
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death

|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
Congrats Rockby! What a great bird! Can't wait to see the pics.
Rained again Sunday morning, so didn't get out then, but it did clear off into a perfectafternoon so we headed out to check out a couple new spots. After hiking 417 miles (or what seemed like 417 miles)into the woods and through muddy plowed fields, we finally decided on a spot. Got set up, but didn't see nothing. :( Heard some yelping way off in the distance, but nothing came in. There is always next weekend....I'm crossing my fingers for NO RAIN!! |

RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
well tomorrow morning is the day! from my uncles scouting report there is 2 really nice toms out in the fields every night, 3 smaller toms, and 4 jakes. Hope fully they are also there in the mornings as well. At 4:45 pm tonight there was 1 tom in the field and now my uncle is in bed and i dont know if the rest of them came out tonight.
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
good luck "zmschillin." lay the smack down!
it looks like we are going to have a great weekend in kansas "kshunterchick". no wind, 80 degree days, should wake up to hundreds of gobbles. so far our kill count is at 13 toms. i am going to start trying to sneak my own hunting in somewhere, i have 3 giant toms spotted that i am saving for myself and my partner. |
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
Congrats beezr and rockby great gobblers, sure glad to see we are on the list, I have been away for a bit, my season starts this saturday it's been a long wait!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!
|
RE: TEAM 24 - Sudden Death
I sure hope you are right about the weather vmartin! I'm seriously thinking about playing hookie from work on Friday to do some hunting! Hunting Saturday is out due to a wedding....(who gets married during turkey season anyway???) But come Sunday.....it's GAME ON! (unless of course it rains....)
