Default Handgun question? H&K 40cal. good for home protection?

I know this is a hunting forum, but I figure a lot of guys in this forum know a lot about guns in general. I know a lot about long guns, but nothing about handguns. I just picked up a H&K U.S.P 40 cal. w/ night sites for home protection. I picked it up for for 799+tax, did I do good and how would you rate this gun?

I would like to hear your opinions!

The H&K USP is a great pistol if you like how it feels and points in your hand. I used to own a USP 45 full size, but found that I just didn't like the large size of the pistol, and also that I preferred a simpler manual safety free system.

And the .40 S&W is an outstanding cartridge for a defensive handgun. My personal preference for ammo has always been Federal Hydra-Shoks. They have a good real world performance record, and I've never had anything less than 100% feed and function reliability (perhaps the most important factor for a defensive pistol). Just make sure you run at least 100 rounds of whatever ammo you want to use for defense through it to check reliability, especially rapid fire, 'cause that's what you'll be doing if the s**t ever hits your fan.

Personally I would rather have an 870 with #4 buck. But there is nothing wrong with the H&K.

Outstanding firearms. Have 8 here and none have ever given me any troubles. Shoot some different ammo to see which your particualr gun favors and if this is intened for personal protection/HD use, by all means get some proper training from a reputable training facility. Proficincy is important

Hate to say it but I do think the pric was a little steep but so long as you, the buyer is happy with the gun, that's what matters.

I have owned one for about 9 years. I love the gun. I use it in home defense and concealed carry. It has never failed, and has proven to be 100 % reliable.

IfHK was good enough for navy seals, then it's good enough for me.

Good luck.

Hard to beat for reliablity in a pistol. I bought a same gun in a 9mm from a police officer i know, and the guy he got if from shot the hell out of it. Tough as nails too. IMO, you got good gun for the job. Nothing wrong with the 870 either. Different strokes for different folks....

they make a wonderful handgun, this is what I carry on duty, but myself and fellow officers wish our department went with the GLOCKS, which I carry off-duty

Excellent pistol. I keep an HK USP compact in 45 ACP as my bedside gun. It's lot easier to stick the HK in the back of my waistband to meet a stranger at the door than a 12 gauge shotgun would be
