I still can't figure out why they call the traps "Live Traps". All the Racoon and Possum that I catch in mine never come out that way.

Well this is just my opinion but, a semiauto 30-06 kicks about the same if not less than most 30-30 lever guns. But for a back up gun, you want all the reliability you can get, hence out of the two you mentioned, a pump would generally be more reliable than a semiauto. Either one, you can't go wrong.

As far as caliber, whatever you can shoot good. 270 is a good one.

The only 30-30 pump I'm aware of ever manufactured was the savage 170. I can't see if youget a browning bar shorttrac or bLr in 7mm08 how you would EVER pick up your 30-30 again. Low recoil, extremely accurate cartridge, fast firing, and any sensible range completely capable. The 7mm08 is perhaps the best all time overall whitetail cartridge ever made. Not only will it drop a deer at ranges most people never shoot,it's good for point blank range as well.

I would get a pump 270, 7mm-08 as a backup. If you dont mind a little bigger then a 270 i would recomend either 308, or 30-06.The 30-06 i had has less recoilthen my dads 30-30.

Look athe the Remongton Model 760 Line of pumps. I have a .308 and .35 Remington 760's and have never had one fail me yet. You can usually pick one or the other up a great used onefor a good price at Scheels if you cant afford the newer models or check out your local gun dealer.

In my experience the pump remingtons are more accurate on average than Browning autos and Rem autos. Pump Rem is very reliable, auto Browning is very reliable, auto Rem has had a bad reputation for feed problems but seems to be better.

308 in a Rem pump would be pleasant, accurate, reliable, with good power.
