RE: round ball .498?
I usually can find things for shooters in need.... but not this time. All I found are stores that sell the moulds for the .498 ball. If you need those, just ask here. I'll follow-up on this thread in a day or-so. There's even a chance that a member here has the mould... could make some-up for ya'.

RE: round ball .498?
i made a mistake. my story is this. i had the pleasure of shooting a real musket from 1863 from a friendly guy at my local range. i was immpressed that this gentleman let me shoot his 2600$ springfield original and found that he was a competition shooter. we got to talking and his feeling was that with the 50 cal. rifle a ball of .475 and a patch of .150 would yield the most accurate result. he said the patch would act as a sabot and that the bullet doesnt touch the rifleing resulting in way less fouling! so i guess i need a .475 ball or mold to try this theory out. any suggestions or opinions on this combination. he also said to start at 50 grains of powder. i learned that 70 grains works great in my tc- new englander.

If you are positive that the guy next to you at the range used a (5) in his description size for the ball you need in your 50 cal rifle, you may have misunderstood him. I will bet he said .495 ball.. not .475. Nobody I know makes a .475 roundball.
You never did say what rifle you are shootin & how old it is. Unless the bore is oversize (or) the rifle is old, you may not need a .495 ball. Most shooters buy .490 balls for their 50 cals... then play around with different patch thickness.. different patch materials. Anyways... Here's a place with the best roundball prices. It looks like the .495 Hornadys are out of stock, but the Speer brand is good also.

There's no need for me to find a store for the .490s... should you decide to buy those. You can find the 490s in any hunting/gun store. If you buy store-bought patches, buy the pre-lubed pillow-ticking patches between .015-.020 for the 490s.... .010 for the 495s.
