XTP
Looking through my "stuff" I found a box of 200gr .400 XTP's Must have had them quite a while. Has anyone used them on deer? What is the speed range for best performance? I might just shoot targets with them.

Some guysi hunt with swear by those bullets. Good sectional density and very effective on deer and hogs. Just bought some myself and am waiting for a warm day to try them in my Encore.
EDITED: I was wrong. Just talked to one of them on the phone. They use the .400Shockwave bullets, that is what i bought.

I have shot targets with them.. they are very accurate. Actually a fun bullet to shoot. I was shooting science projects one day. That old fruits and vegetables that the refrigerator hid on me and then tried to change their molecular density. I set oranges and some old apples and a red cabbage out at the target and shot them with the 200 grain XTP. It just makes those things explode. What they would do in a deer I have no idea.

RE: XTP
Chasam60,I have used both the 50/40 200gr XTP and the 50/40 200gr SW to take deer and boar and I am impressed by the flatness of trajectory and their effectiveness on game. The bc of the SW is.269 and the SD is 179 I consider this very good for a muzzle loading bullet. I use 150 gr RSin the Omega [because thats what groups best in it] and get a trajectory of +3" @ 100yds and -4"@ 200yds I use 110of 777 in the Triumph and it has about 6 " drop @ 200yds. These bullets have been one of the easiest to get to shoot good in all my inlines. I still like the 250 Gold Dot to get bang flops at short distance in thick brush. Lee

The .400 cal 200 grain XTP is a great bullet for deer. I've taken 2 deer in 2 years with them- both boom-flops. Both shots were around 100 yards. As far as velocities go, I think that you would get the best performance with 80 - 110 grains 777 or equivalent. I'm not sure if I would use 150 grain magnum charge with this bullet - they can fragment some or get jacket separation at extreme velocities. I'm not a speed freak, so I use 80 grains 777 in a .45 cal. I'm not saying they are the absolute best bullet out there (I'd love to play around with some other rounds too), but I have about 35 bullets left of a 100 round box, and I'm happy enough to stick with the XTP's til I run out.

I have never shot a 150 gr load.I worked up to 120 in the Omega but saw no difference other than more recoil. I shoot 110 with a 250 SST and 100 with a 260 Nosler partition. I do not think I will shoot anymore deer with the SST. I have killed 4 but only one was DRT. Two were found dead over 100-150 yds away. One required a 2nd shot she was down and could not get up,but would not die. The Noslers plant them fast. I shot quite a few with a 240/44 XTP from my Rem 700 none went more than 30 yds most did not go 10. Thanks to all for the info.
