I'm a biologist, so I love questions like this. Yay that you care about your studies. Why not incorporate your love for the shooting sports and do something related to ballistics (bullet/shot trajectory)....you've got physics right there.
Or you could always go searching for a new plant to name after you and your g/f. Just joking.
Best of luck with the project -
Kimberly

I know from experience in the science fair department that they are for the most part anti-gun past the school level. If you have the time, a great project deals with the removal of oil from either enviroment situations or furs/feathers to simulate animal cleaners. Use motor oil and then try to clean it up with a variety of things, soap, detergent, etc...

do like myth busters find a myth and solve it, dont do a potato gun they are very dangerous. My great uncle lost an eye with one and schools DONT LIKE GUNS.
Ouch, sorry to hear about your uncle.

we had a teacher in 8th grade that let us build a potato gun as a project for her class...we had to plead our case before the principal but we got permission to build and shoot it as part of the project...we ended up shooting a crow with one of the potatoes
