My votes go to the 7mm08 and 25-06, both are light-kicking rounds with some major knockdown power

i like the .270 personally. it has relatively light recoil, and it packs a punch on the deer. it is THE MOST popular deer gun around here. anything from a .222 to a .500 S&W will work though. just make the first shot count.

Heck, a muzzle break on a .50 will tame it down to a 12 guage. At least, that's what they say on Barret's site...Never can trust them evil, heathernistic firearm manufaturers

The bigger caliber the better. But don't overshoot yourself. I use a 30-06. Dad uses a 300 mag and a 308.

I have a buddy who uses a 30-30, and another friend who uses a 243. (seems a bit light though for deer, IMO)

not true. you dont need a huge caliber. a .223 will work great. in fact, around here, it and the .243 are the leading deer rifles among new/young shooters. i witnessed someone drop a deer this last season with a .223. they are more deadly than my dads 30-30.
