well he free ranges them during the day, and thats when they kill them.
they were on vacation one time and when they got back; all 30 of their chickens were dead. so the hawks are a big problem
and i think hes only killed one or 2. he takes pot shots at them with a .22 (i know, another stupid thing) and almost always misses. hes a dumb
common sense says if somethings not working for you then change what your doing. he should use use bowmanaj's idea, if they free range just make a big enclosure. if they invest a lot of money into them, then at least that would keep them from getting killed.

You can use one to hunt with here if you are a licensed falconer and have trained under a licensed falconer. The bird has to be captive bred. Killing or molesting a wild raptor in any way means jail time in Michigan.
my boyfriend and i were thinking of going to get our falconers license but its a lot of money involved in getting your license and after, but it would be a neat thing to be able to do one day.

that would defeat the purpose of "free range" then

The point CC (and as well asBowman)were pointing out, was that your friend should make compromises, which is not letting them 'free range' and keep them in pen so they do not get plunked by my beloved Red T Hawk :)

(assuming 'free ranges' does in fact mean running out in open)

I found this regarding killing Red T Hawks in Ohio

It really isn't hard to make something forthe chickenswith T-posts and chicken wire. I know its not you shooting hawks, but just a suggestion for your buddy. Butler county is only about 25 minutes up the highway, I would be happy to donate an old plywood coop. I just don't like the fact that redtail hawks are being shot. I understand the free-range deal with the chickens, we have free range guinea hens..But maybe there is another way so that he doesn't shoot hawks

RE: speaking of animals

ah ha really? how stupid do you think i am?

obviously it would defeat the purpose of free range. im saying that instead of shooting a bunch of hawks, when they are only doing something that is natural for them, save yourself a lot of future time and money, a build a pig pen. the chickens probably dont care as long as they can go and peck around and do their thing even in a closed in area i dont think its going to matter! i realize its not you, but your buddy cant complain if he is doing nothing, and shooting hawks isnt doing something.

you do realize that this whole area would need a TOP ON IT and that would be very time consuming and costly. if i were him id just get one of those hawkers license or whatever you were talking about so he can legally kill them when they kill his chickens. or just make them not free range.
