hanging deer
i noticed in another thread that someone had hung their deer by the head. how many other ppl practice this??? i dont and you never see it in new england. i think its degrading to hang a deer this way. imo. whats everyone elses thoughts. and i dont want the song and dance that
"if your gonna mount it" cuz my brother is a taxidermist and thats a false statement |
RE: hanging deer
Ive heard of them being hung by the head on rare occassions but ive never seen it done.
|
RE: hanging deer
Ive seen it a few times, it's just personal preference. In my opinion it is just much easier to sking them starting at the back legs and working down towards the head.
|
RE: hanging deer
since i have been around deer hunting i have been involved in the killing of several hundred deer and we process our own each fall. its just one of those thiungs thatbother me. its like a pet peeve i guess. ive seen it a few times as well i just dont like it. now the moose we kill we hang by the horns but for some reasoin i see that in a different light.......maybe its me haha
|
RE: hanging deer
When we kill a moose or anything that large we are usualy so far in the middle of nowhere in Canada that we have ot pack it out so there is no hanging it.
|
RE: hanging deer
in northern wisconsin most people (close to everyone) hang deer by the neck its something i grew up seeing realy comon up in my neck of the woods
|
RE: hanging deer
retakes, our moose have to be taken to a check stationa nd have to be in tact. no quartering. so when we get back to camp we wrap a chain around the base of their horns and up they go.
|
RE: hanging deer
I've never seen it in person and I dont do it myself. But I have seen pics of deer hung like that. I'm like you sky, I don't like it at all. But, to each his own.
|
RE: hanging deer
It's easier to gut if its hung with the head up, but most hunters, myself included, gut the deer in the field on the ground. And deer are alot easier to skin with the head towards the ground, especially if your going to mount it.
I have never seen one hung by its head. |
RE: hanging deer
I only gutted one while hanging once, and it was a mess haha
|
RE: hanging deer
why would you everNOT gut a deer in the woods imidiatley after recovery? they areway easier to gut when they are on their backs not hung by the head. all i can pictureis SPLAT! then you gotta take care of that mess too. no thanks. and siman is right about skining, its easier when they are hung by their hind legs fo sho. i just dont like the looks of it and i doubt i ever will
|
RE: hanging deer
i hang by the legs
|
RE: hanging deer
You might have seen it in my other thread "tricks/funny stories". Where I am in Michigan its about 50/50 by hanging them by the head or two hind legs. Usually we hang them my the head to let them drip out, then when we go to butcher them flip them over so they are upside down

RE: hanging deer
the woods where i hunt is on my uncles tree farm. we have a couple trails running thru there that we can drive the gator through. after one of us gets a deer, we radio in to the cabin and tell either my aunts, or cousins to get the gator and meet us where we tell them to. we load the deer in the gator and drive it up to the hanging station. not sure why we never gutted in the field...just the way they did things before i started hunting. so sky thats a reason ppl, dont always gut it in the field.
as for hanging it by the head, i would rather they hang it by the rack than around the neck. i have seen that a couple times...just hate it. we always hang ours by the legs. we would never have any reason to hang one by the head, but im sure some ppl, where raised by going around the head, so thats what they do. to each his own....no matter our opinions. |
RE: hanging deer
If you are going to have the deer mounted ya dont hang it by the head it will damage the cape before you get it to the taxidermist but if not hang them by the head if you hang them by the legs tare and strach the meat
|
RE: hanging deer
we always hang our dder by the head and skin it from the neck down. we find if there is any extra fluids in the body cavity still, that they drain out a lot easier

In a case like that it was just much easier to gut it in the barn not in the woods. |

RE: hanging deer
haha, we get a deer that is upward of 280 if we are really really really lucky. but my uncles are all at least 6 foot 6 and jacked. so getting them into a gator s no problem, and we usually dont have to drag it more than 200 yards. but there are those rare occasions.
whatever works for ppl, its all bought how you learned to do it, and what you got to work with. deep thick woods of maine would be tougher to do our way. |

nope, to each his own

RE: hanging deer
pretty much. andys last post summed up pretty good think. i just thought it would be interesting to see how it was done in dif. parts of the country. it cool how much techniques change from place to place
somethin different that andy got me thinking about is, whats the furthest any of you have ever dragged a deer?? some of you can ppretty well drive to them it seems other not so much and places in the northeast you might as well forget it. for me and my ol man the furthest was an 11 pt. he shot up in eustis that weighed 209 and we dragged it about 2.6 miles according to google earth. took 7 hours. i bet it would have tqaken longer on bare ground im sure |
RE: hanging deer
farthest drag, before we got the gator. dragged my deer that was in my pic. in the biggest buck thread. weighed 235, dragged it little over a mile mostly up hill. but like i said, 4 guys all over 6 foot, 6 and at least 260 of muscle, they move it pretty quick lol
|
RE: hanging deer
my farthest drag was a little over a mile. it was a big nine point my buddy shot. dressed out at 195. we drug it just over a mile according to google earth, an amazing thing.
