The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were founded in 1873. Their mandate at that time was to bring law and order to the Canadian west. For your information - after the slaughter of the 7th cavalry by the Sioux they fled to Canada, where they were met by 3 Mounted Policemen - who took charge and brought them to a reserve. It was also 3 Moujnted Police men thet returned them to the U.S. Not bad for taking care of a group that just killed the 7th Cavalry. Today they are the Federal Police Force for Canada, and the one Force does all the work similiar to the F.B.I., Secret Service, N.C.I.S., Border Patrol etc. They are also contracted out to all the Provinces (except Ontario and Quebec) as the Provincial (State) Police and in a lot of areas also do municipal policing. Although we still have the Miusical Ride, horses are no longer part of our work requirement or training.
