If you want a 4X4 and decent gas milage i would look at a jeep cherokee, you can get the older ones for around $1000-$2500, but look under it and check the floor boards cause they are very prone to rust, especially ones from a climate with snow, all the salt will really do a number on the floor boards. I have an 89 cherokee with 3 inch lift and 31X10.50 tires, it was only $1400 lift and tires included and after i replaced a few parts it runs good.

4x4 look at rangers or s10 if your wanting to stay "reasonable" on gas.

honda civic and 6cyl camaros can be found cheap if your wanting to stay with a car for mileage

If you want something smaller and quick, get an S10. Mine has the V6 4.3L and is plenty quick and has the benefit of a pickup box so I can haul stuff. It is a 2WD and I get 18 to 19 MPH in town and about 24 on the highway. It cost me $3000 and only had 62,000 miles on it.

isuzu rodeo " suv" or isuzu pup " pickup" we had an 87 pup with a 4 banger, 5 speed, 4x4 and got 24mpg. Great running truck and very comfortable inside and the ride was comfortable. I have a 92 rodeo and if you keep it a 65 you'll get a little over 26mpg, and that is a 4x4 also. They are both awesome for off roading. 4-low will just crawl.
