They're right - the mom gets shot... You might have been remembering the part where Bambi himself gets shot (during the forest fire) and confusing that with the dad getting shot.

i watched that movie a couple months ago just cause i found it in our cabinet and i haven't seen it in a while. the mom gets shot, and so does bambi eventually. he dont die though. Fewww...
