heyits up to you whatever fit's you right iuse a 30-06 but a 3-08 is a good gun dont get a rifle that hurts you or makes you flinch

The 300 class is very choice for elk. There is tons of guns that will kill elk. From my EX I would go 300 win 300 wsm 300 web and there is few more. I would shoot 180 grain bulets.

Not sure where you are going but a good spotting scope is very inportaint here in MT.

Good luck

.300 win mag! cant go wrong for elk it can push a 180 gr Hornady Spire Point at 2986 fps at the muzzle and is packed with energey out a ways!

I would agree with the .300 Mag recommendation. You should try to find someone who has one and shoot it first, though. The recoil is too much for quite a few folks. If you are one of those folks, just admit it and look into something smaller. 7MM Magnums are real popular out here. A .270 WSM with a Nosler Accubond bullet will drop an elk reliably without a lot of recoil. If your shots are going to be within 300 yards, there are a number of mild recoiling calibers based on the .308 Winchester case that will do the job just fine - with good bullets and good shot placement. The 7MM-08 is a real sleeper with a 140 Accubond or a 150 Scirocco.

Well, although I haven't hunted elk yet, I will someday, and when that day comes, I'll be bringing along a .35 Whelen. Packs a punch (maybe not as much as a .300 Mag??) and Remington's now chambering it in their CDL :)Factory bullet selection is pretty slim, but I've heard the Federal Trohy Bonded Bear Claw works awesome. I'm 16, a big kid, and I don't find the recoil to be bad, I wouldn't want to shoot it all day long.but that's just me. But anyways, since I've never hunted elk, you can disregard this if you want:D

i would personally recommend the 30-06. it's a great all around centrefire and it packs plenty of punch for anything in north america without too much recoil. that's why i bought mine. btw how old are you?? that will make a big difference.

I'll second the 30-06 or 7mm just because of the recoil issue...just not worth messing with untill you decide you NEED a 300...and you don't for an elk. ALSO ALSO ALSO look at the overall weight of the rifle...you don't want to pack around a 9lbs gun all day!!!

My favorite is a 7mm Rem. Mag.
