I agree with some of the others in the use of Diesel and burning them out.. We had a few in a plot that we sawed off at ground level and left sit for a year or so.. We then took the tip of a chainsaw and ran it into the stump in several spots and down about 6 to 8 inches then saturated with diesel and set on fire.. It worked really well and I am able to run a disc thru it without worrying about the stumps..Before the removal we still disced the plot with a offset disc you just have to slow down and let it roll over the stumps easily..

Some gardening magazines sell a mixture that you put on top and it will slowly burn it out right to the tip of the roots, without using actual fire. It is some kind of chemical reaction.

Drill or cut holes and desiel fuel works well. We also drilled holes and filled with molases and let the bears do the work for us. Once the bears discovered it they chewed and scratched to anmost nothing.

Packing the chain saw cuts with Ammonuim nitrate will greatly speed the composition, espedially if you might be worried about leaving a burning stump alone in the timber if it is close.

I bought a stump grinder for my bobcat - it got rid of them in short time.
