Is it ok to
Is ok to put out my 10-10-10 fertilizer the same day I plant my clover seed?
What clover seed is the best, red, white, ladino? I dont want to spend $140 on the whitetail extreme if I dont have to. My PH is about 6.0. |
RE: Is it ok to
I would spread the fertilizer before you plant. Ladino is probably the best clover and you should get your pH up to 7 before you plant.

RE: Is it ok to
could you put out P and K instead? you can buy it for real cheap at your local co-op.
i don't think clover needs much N, if any, at planting. but i could be wrong. |
RE: Is it ok to
psandhu is right about Nitrogen -
Clover should need very little, and the weeds thrive on it. If the plot is mostly an annual plot for deer attraction - I wouldn't worry about too much N. Don't be surprised if weeds grow well though. FH |
RE: Is it ok to
psandhu,
What is P and K? Are you saying the 10-10-10 has too much N? |
RE: Is it ok to
P is potash
K is potassium n is nitrogen that is where the vaules of 10-10-10 come from. legumes will produce their own nitrogen and by adding it to the soil you'll promote weed growth. The nitrogen will not benefit the clover at all. The first # in 10-10-10 represents the amount of Nitrogen(N) in the fertilizer. you'll want one with the lowest first number as possible http://www.fertilizer.com/university/fertuniv02.htm this link my help you to get a better understanding of what's in fertilizer. |
RE: Is it ok to
Adams, Thanks for the info. I hope I can find one with the lowest nitrogen.
"Potash" ??? It not just for breakfast anymore:D |
RE: Is it ok to
Hi
10-10-10 Mean that in your'e bags you have 10% of N by weight 10% of P2O5 by weight 10% of K2O by weight For a 50 pounds of fertilizer you have 5 pounds of N, 5 pounds of P2O5 etc.... Don't forget, the soil analyses give you're results in ppm or kg/Ha of P or K alone. To convert kg/ha of P in kg/Ha of P2O5 you have to multiply the P weight by 2.29 To convert kg/Ha of P in Kg/Ha of K2O you have to multiply the K weight by 1.2. Be sure that the requirement of your'e nutriments for a specific plant are expressed by weight of P2O5 or weight of P alone.... For a new field of alfalfa or clover you can add an extra 35-50 pounds of N/acre. Info. website http://ndsuext.nodak.edu/extpubs/soilfert.htm Yann |

Yann,
Welcome aboard! That's a great link. Where were you six months ago:D |
RE: Is it ok to
Thanks for the input guys. Its been a big help.
I have purchased Whitetail Extreme, Imperial Clover, Biologic green patch and a regular ole bag of white clover from the co-op. I have several different hunting/plots that I am trying to get in this weekend. My test is to see how each of these different crops will do. i.e. is the $$ worth it for the premium brands. These places are tough to get to so I am doing the bagged lime thing. I would guess that my three plots are about a total of 1.5 acres. I already have 400 pounds of 10-10-10 from another job. Should I still get some different fertilizer or will this do? Thanks |
