austrian winter peas

Has anyone tried austrian winter peas for a food plot. Will they grow in heavy clay soil in VA. A friend who is a farmer used them about 5 years ago as a cover crop. They were not in an area with a heavy deer population. So i don't know if deer will eat them.

I used them in a mix with oats, rye and wheat. The problem I had was that the deer ate them off at ground level when they were about 2" high and they did not come back.
