Default Food plots in the woods?

Can you put a food plot in the woods and have it work or is that a stupid idea and what would you plant to draw deer?

If you mean in dense woods you may run into a problem with sunlight. If you plant clover in small clearings you' ll have a good draw for deer.

Soil prep is really tricky in the wooded area... Soil samples are a must.

We planted 2 small (40' x 100' ) plots on our land this year and , and I have been really impressed with the amount of deer they have brung in. We purchased a small disc, that we pull behind an atv and it worked perfect for maneuvering through the woods. We trimmed a few limbs for sunlight and planted a mix of clover, wheat, oats, and barrassicus( Bio Logic) and used triple 13 fertilizer and it is growing nicely. The deer don' t even hesitate to step out in it since they are surrounded by woods. Works great for my dad and I and we plan to do it every year now. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THIS SEASON!!!!!!!!

We also do small plots in the woods. Lime and fertilizer to the soil sample specs and get ready. Trimming some limbs is a must in many situations.

We planted a few approx. 8 ft. wide trails we have going back into the woods w/ clover and milo. It does all right since the woods aren' t too thick in this area. The deer love coming down these trails!

If you feel you' ll get enough sunlight for growth, polts in the woods can work well. When first planting a new plot in our woods(usually at best no bigger than 40' x100' ), we like to tickle the soil best we can and then throw rutabegga seeds in. EXCELLENT way to break up the soil for further plantings. They won' t need to penetrate soil to deep(3" ) will work as they tend to grow out of the soil if need be. The deer ABSOLUTLY love them in the fall when everything else is dying/dead. Carrots also work well but they don' t break the soil up as well. Steve
