food plots for deer and turkey
I have been reading about putting in food plots and what the best way is. A good food plot requires several things and when you take short cuts the results will be less than good. Whitetail Institute has spent lots for money developing seed for these plots. They also tell you how to do it. A good food plot od Imperial clove will last for several years and will yield a good deer crop.
There have been several writers asking how to put the seed down and if they should use a drag or cultipacker. There is NO substitute for a cultipacker. Yes they can be expensive but for the small plot hunter there are ATV drawn 4 foot cultipackers for $ 5-600. They will last forever. What they do for planting is what horny bucks do for does. We also put down oaks, turnips, beets all with our cultipacker. If you can scrath the groud and break loose the top 3" and then run over it with the cultipacker, fertilize and seed and run over it again with the cultipacker you will have a good plot. Last year was a disaster to most of this USA. This year might be different as we all have had rain and snow. If you are looking for a cultipacker, go to "Craigs list in St. Louis, MO and type in cultipacker. His will fit in a pickup and will do the job.
