Too Wet to plant???????
I tried to prep a feild last week, it seemed a little wet................
Hopefully, things will go a little better this weekend!!!!!! |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Is that a a boat anchor or a tractor? :D

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
years ago, a farmer where I used to live had a bulldozer sink like that. He went to town to get help, and when they came back the dozer had completely sunk out of sight. They tried probing with 10 foot rods; no luck. I guess it' s still down there in that sinkhole. I would suggest that you tie a long rope and a float so you can find it if it goes further.

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Farmhunter; you' re OK as long as the air intake and exhaust are above water.
Nice picture. Dan O. |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
I also went to plant our feild last weekend. Sunk the ATV.
Our feild can stay that wet mostly year around, grass grows there now, can we plant a food plot? What to plant?, How to plant? Do we frost seed? |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Got a local Coop or Farm Supply? Get some annual Ryegrass and mix with either Kentland red clover or Ladino White. If they suggest another variety seriously consider it. They usually know what is best for your area. I don' t think any of those specialty seed mixes would do very good in your field condition. Next year the Ryegrass should be almost gone. If your clover has done well, sparay the plot with grass killer and you should have a real good Clover plot. If it stays that wet year around, the deer won' t be able to run away very fast, so you can pick and choose.

Al,
Russ made a good suggestion on the Ladino. It is very suitable to wet conditions and it doesn' t do well through a drought. I tried it in a couple wet spots where I couldn' t get anything else to grow and it hasn' t stopped yet. Not sure on the Kentland red clover but I would say go with Russ on that one too. I would say in your area you should be ok to plant it now and then reseed in the fall. If it' s as wet as you say you won' t be able to disc it and probably don' t need to. Sew it just before a rain and it should start gettin' green in a week. |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Yes it has been raining alot here as well, we have been trying to get two 1 acre plots of ladino in for almost a month, We tilled, and looks like we will spray this weekend. I was thinking then the waiting a week to let it dry out, and doing a controlled burn and broadcasting just before a rain. I really dont want to disc again and turn up more weeds. Any one try this before?

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
I was in chiropractic school in Davenport, IA in ' 93 when the Mississippi went over the banks. All the feeder rivers and creeks also went over into the fields. All along Interstate 80 and 88 this was not an uncommon site. The water was higher than the fence posts.

Farmhunter-- that must be a John Deere, my old David Brown would have made it through there, kinda like walks on water for me.:D[&:] Thanks for the picture, its great, and I hope you got it out o.k.. terry

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Farm Hunter keep us updated. Did you get it out yet and how? I had to let a big " wow" out when I seen the picture. Only thing that could be worse if it is near a river that is rising. In my area, very little corn is out yet due to the wet spring.

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
I keep coming back here to see if you got the tractor out yet and noticed all the rocks in the picture. Are you going to have a rock gathering ( bunch of friends) again this year? [&:]:D Rocks are the only crop I can grow better than you. terry

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
I wounder. Why arn' t there any tire tracks leading up the the so called tractor? the grass behind the tires seams untouched. What kind of wheels are those tires mounted to? Could this possible be some tractor parts set in a wet field?[:o]

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Hay,
Russ & Ballistictip, thanks for the info. My next chance to get up to my 40 acres of dirt ( north central Wi.) is Memorial Day weekend. I hope things are starting to grow so we can Round up the field for the first time. I plan to do it again the following weekend. and plant the weekend after that. Seed and let rain do the work? Do you think any of the No-Plow seeds will work if we can' t cut the grass or till? Otherwise I will try the Ryegrass & Lidino clover. Is there a great differance? Thought I had a plan until I found out the field is very wet year around. Any additional help would be GREAT. Thanks |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Allright - I almost feel a little bad posting it - its not my tractor - Its in a farmer' s field up the road ( still there too ) I' m 99% sure its a fake - but it got me, I stopped to take the picture you saw.
I thought it was kind of funny, hope others find a little humor in it too.. Really, we' re about 1/2 way through spring planting - and it has been wet. I' ll start another post updating our spring planting. |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
UncleAl,
The plot where I have the ladino and Kentland red has been sloppy wet since January, but the stuff still grows. The Ladino is covered with blooms but the Kentland has very few. After checking closely, I found that the deer were keeping it cropped so well that a bloom doesn' t stand a chance. Almost had a tractor as in Farmhunter' s post, tried to clip the grass prior to spraying it. Front end went down, very carefully backed out and decided to wait a few more drying days. I think I have a 90% kill on the grass so will have to spray once more to finish it. It' s been a very wet spring with very little sun to dry anything out. Russ |
RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Farmhunter, you really hooked me. I took the bait, the sinker, the bobber and about 10ft. of line. You are definitely a rascal and a scamp. And I was all weepy about your tractor. [:@][:' (][&:]

RE: Too Wet to plant???????
Russ,
Going back up north to my our piece of dirt (or I should say MUD) this weekend. Hope it has started to green up so we can kill it. Thank for the info. Uncle Al |
