Having an available mineral block may help to a small degree, but the main thing a buck needs is age. Genetics (which you probably can' t help), age (which you can help), year round quality food (that you can aid) and helping maintain a well balanced herd ratio and number are also important.

timbercruiser summed up the needs nicely. If you use a mineral supplement, I would try to locate is in a secluded area along a well used deer trail.

If you can get FRM deer minerals they work really great but make sure they are in a hidden area.I used it and have seen the deer dig it up but I don' t hunt over it.

All good advice... However a deer needs 1.0 - 1.5 oz. of quality vit/min a day to make a meaningful difference and they won' t get that off a block. Not to mention the Bovine TB thing... You want the supplement in a really concealed area.
