The above link will take you to a flyer with a registration slip attached. Unfortunately, the DNR declined to participate in these workshops. I' m working to change the flyer now. However, representatives from Whitetails Forever, the United Sportsman Alliance, and QDMA have agreed to participate.

Deer_Babe,

Just curious. It appears that the Unitited Sportmens Alliance has no philosophy and bases whatever they do have on nothing. Doesn' t sound like a very constructive talk if they are included. Also, I don' t think the Whitetails Forever really bases their views on any substantial information as well.

What kind of scientific research or management philosophy can USA and WF bring to the table?

NorthJeff,
Thanks for the question. One of the motivating factors for me organizing these workshops is to bring hunters, farmers, land owners, and other' s interested in deer management together to learn about scientific deer management (SDM) in a constructive and relaxing enviroment, where people are entitiled to their own opinion, but the focus is on SDM. Last year, people who attended these workshops rated them very highly for the information presented and the manner in which they were conducted.

As you' re probably aware WF and USA are against the mandatory QDM regulations, as are many other hunters in Michigan. My reason for having these workshops and for the post on Michigan-Sportsman is to work towards a greater understanding of SDM. I spoke to both President' s of WF and USA and had very constructive conversations with both of them on SDM. I found them to be very reasonable and very informed on SDM. I invited them to the workshops, not to create controversy, but to demonstrate a united front for SDM.

The mandatory QDM regs and the way they are presented to focus mostly on antlers are dividing the sporting community. If we all wait for the DNR/NRC to start making their decisions based on science instead of politics, the Michigan deer herd will not ever be healthy and balanced with the habitat. I' m doing my part to bring hunters, farmers, and land owners together to learn about scientific deer management.

Maybe I' m naive, but I am committed to doing what' s best for the resource, and having hunters become so divided and focused on this sticking point in deer mangement (mandatory regs and antler restrictions) has not produced a scientifically managed herd. I chose wildlife management as a career, but it' s more a way of life to me. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to earn a BS and MS in Wildlife Management (Deer), with time in the field to back it up. Others may not have had the opportunites I' ve had, but have a desire to learn. The workshops provide an opportunity for that, so they can make informed decisions based on sound science.

Sounds very positive.

The referendums that were shot down in the thumb were the direct results of lies and deceit on the part of SA and the Michigan Bowhunters. I have no problem with the idea of involving multiple groups in the discussion, but I don' t appreciate the dishonesty of the various groups that use scare tactics and outright lies to push their agenda.

The problem is that both groups have no basis for anything they believe in. The QDMA not only has basis, but they founded it and wrote the book.

I' m all for education, but would have a hard time being involved with a group that took an active role in the deminishment and destruction of positive opportunities within my state of MI. If they did it with facts, research and truth, fine....but they didn' t. Kind of hard to forget.

The way the mandatory regs were delivered and presented was done with facts and research, as it was in PA.

I applaud your efforts, it is truly a worthy cause, but I actually think that the state of MI will one day base there methods of management on fact, long before hunters in this backwards state would do it themselves. That is the problem!
