RE: having trouble figuring out what to plant....
I have found the deer in my neighborhood really love my clover andchickory mix. The chickory grows fast and is very drought tolerant. If you can keep grass and weeds out of it, it can last 5 years or more. But I usually frost seed a little in each spring anyways.
You probly need to get it in pretty soon. |

RE: having trouble figuring out what to plant....
You're right you can save a couple bucks at the co-op but at the 3 co-ops in my area, you can't get anyone who seems to have better than a guess at what to do. If your a first timer call the Whitetail Institute r check them out on the web,www.whitetailiinstitute.com.When I planted my first plot over 12 years ago I tried to save the same $5-10 by searching around for seeds that my buddies suggested. After about three visits to co-ops I planted what they had and failed. To say nothing about all the gas I burned. I called WI and they walked me thru the entire planting process. I bought threr seed and it worked just like they said. Since them I have three plots of WI seed that is in it's third year and the deer are wearing it out. ICALL is right but with gas at $3.50 a gallon I don't know if its cheaper anymore to look around and try to find the right seed.
POP With fert. and lime at 3x two years ago prices, buy the best seed and plant correctly. I guarantee you'llcome outcheaper and have a better chance at success. |
RE: having trouble figuring out what to plant....
POP, I agree. I spent the extra money ($8) for the Institute seed and it worked for me also. I had a little trouble last year withgrass and plan on sprayiing this year to get rid of them I hope.

RE: having trouble figuring out what to plant....
anyone use Whitetail Institute Clover? i have heard awesome things about it and wondered if anyone here used it? also i wondered about alfa rack
|
RE: having trouble figuring out what to plant....
I've used it for years. I'll tell you that it has worked for me. I get about 4 years out of a stand and in the past two years my neighbors have switched to it. I was sucking so many deer off their places they gave up. I talked with my neighbor to my north lastmonth and he said his sightings have increased about 30% in three years.
Couplethings to remember, soil test and be sure to follow the recommendations. Lime is important and the seeds need to be shallow, no deeper than 1/8". I prep the soil and leave the seed on top. Good Luck Otis |
