Ashes would work like lime in the soil. I think the nitrogen and phosphorus would burn up and you'd largely be left with potassium.

Thanks, I asked my dad about this and he said that while it would make a difference.. it wouldnt be THAT MUCH more beneficial. I have been trying to talk him into a prescribed burn for the last couple weeks but he just wont bite on that idea.

Have your dad get the county forester out to look at the area ya'll are thinking about doing the prescribed burn on. The majority of the time a control burn will help your forest greatly.

A prescribed burn has many factors that need to be looked into before deciding to implement the burn. Thing like what time of year, what types of vegetation is being removed, what your management goals are, along with many other things.

I always broadcast my ashes back into the land....... 100 acres can absorb all the ashes you can burn in your fireplace. If you are talking a small area moderation is advised or you can over alkaline.....
