Default Planted 64 Apple Trees Today

I planted 64 apple trees today that I ordered through Morse Nursery. They were great to work with, and I'm really happy I ordered through them. If anyone is looking for wildlife trees, they should look at www.morsenursery.com

Apples are the way to attract deer to your place. One can buy trees that bear in summer and fall. The deer will eat them for months. Black bear love them too.

What Apple trees did you get???

I was there last week and picked up some Sawtooth Oaks(Gobbler Strain), Silky Dogwood and Hazelnut. Charlie seems to have a good thing going there!

Make sure you screen them from Mice with tubing or 1/4" mesh - for at least 2-3 ft up the trunk. After this years' deep snows - I'm going to loses some apples after 3 years - and pines after 5 years because of Mice - It makes me furious!

You can see that I put trunk protection on - but only for 12"-18" on most trees. - Don't make my mistake.

You're absolutely correct Farm Hunter. The guard needs to be above the highest snow depth. I used 1 1/2' sump hose to keep the cost down. As the trees grow I can upsize and reuse the sump hose.

Are you sure that you don't have a few porkies in your bush?

Dude! I'm sorry to see that happen to all of your hard work. That really pisses me off. I suppose you have declared war on the mice. Good luck. Maybe you can wrap some cheesecloth on the trees to save them. Call your county extension agent. Good luck my friend.

Clint; he'd need to bridge graft the trees if they were valuable enough. If the path of bark is lost from the roots to the branches the upper parts will die.

I lost a couple of trees a few years back from mice. Now I spray a big area around my trees with round up , no weeds means no mice. And to be extra careful you can throw a couple of moth balls around the bases of your tree guards.

Good luck, Jim
