RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
Mississippi is similar,
4 points or better for adults, kids can shoot spikes. Of course, we have more deer here than you can shake a stick at. Limit is 3 bucks and 3 does per person per year, plus an extra two does per year by archery. Hank |
RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
Honestly, I cant wait for statewide antler restrictions!
But, I am no biologist, so I might be over looking something? |
RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
I hate antler restrictions. I like shooting small bucks because they are 1 and 1/2 years old, just right for eating. (yes and there are exceptions to every rule)
I can't tell how old a doe is out in the field. Plus I don't shoot moms or fawns. And yes I know a fawn will survive without the mom, but I have watched fawns after their mom was shot by someone and I find it heartbreaking. Just my opinion, right or wrong. |
RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
Rackluster,it isn't just those 2 things.
Wait untill the deer hunting becomes so big that the outfitters come in buying and leasing ALL the land around and you are stuck hunting public land with everyone else while those that can afford it get to shoot those big bucks you are after. I have seen it happen and I have had first hand experience. It hasn't gotten out of hand yet but it is well on it's way. Be carefull what you wish for,you just might get it.;) I love hunting for racks and that is MY CHOICE but I have NO RIGHT to tell someone else what they should or shouldn't shoot, unless for the health of the herd. This is still America.somewhat. The other day I was told I couldn't walk my dog in the city limits because of a festival that was going on and he was on a leash. Is this kind of government legislation really what people want?[:o] |
RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
Hmmm, KS. doesn't have any point restrictions, but plenty of big antlers! Don't think you're idea is needed every where!

RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
A buddy of mine saw around 40 deer saturday. guess how many bucks he saw.....ZERO. antler restrictions would helpkeep the buck/doe ration in check.

RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
I really detest legislating antler size for a couple reasons. One, there are a lot of people don't get to hunt but a couple days a year. There is an over abudance of deer almost everywhere today. There's a decline in hunter numbers. The only people asking and pushing these law changes(and getting them through) are the "HORN HUNTERS". Most of the people in NY are meat hunters. Most of the deer in NY are killed by meat hunters. It's nice if you don't care about meat and want to "SHOOT THE BIG ONE" and get your picture in the paper or become an instant "Expert" on Team Realtree. It's not what hunting is about. It's about pursuing and killing. It has nothing to do with herd health or meat quality. It only has to do with bragging rights and kudos. That's what I dislike about it. I remember when there weren't deer in many parts of NY, like the woods behind my house as a kid. When they finally legislate enough to create a MEGA BUCK crop, the rich and famous will come in and lease away your hunting grounds like they did in Kansas and push the real hunters out. It will then become a business and not a sport.

RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
What about this? You have1 1/2 year old 6 or 8 point basket racks that have the potential to become very nice in another year or two and they get shot leaving 1 1/2 year old spikes and forkhorns that maybe don't have the potential to become as good. I'd rather see spikes get shot.

RE: i think this restriction should be everywhere
I hunt for meat, not to play god and try to manipulate which deer breed. I also dont particuarly want to be a pawn of the state game commission trying to get more money out of fellow hunters.
