I would go with the 308 in one of the short stock rifles.

All are very great calibers which will handle the job. I would go with the .30-06 or 7mm mag because I have seen them take a small doe to a huge elk with no problem at all. Although the .30-06 has been my favorite caliber I am really impressed with the 7mm mag and it will most likely be my go to caliber for the majority of big game.

I think all three would do the job but I prefer short actions so the 308 would have my vote.

308 is all you would ever need for those critters. I am not a 7MM Rem Mag fan at all.

I like my .270 also. What you use probably has something to do with specific hunting conditions, but any of them will kill a deer if you do your job with shot placement.

another vote for the tried and true .308. it will be more than capable of handling deer/hog plus almost every other North American big game. The 7mm is good to, but I would use the 308. Good luck with your choice.

All good choices so pick which ever you want. I personally use a 7mm rem mag for everything I hunt(Lope, deer, moose and elk) and it has performed excellent in all avenues.

Best of luck.

I use both the .308 and 7MM RM on deer, and I really think that the .308 does a better job!

I use a .308 win and I'm very happy with the performance. For the animals you mentioned I think it's pretty much academic and comes down to preference. I agree with the reasons the other folks gave for the .308.

Good luck.

.308 in a quick handling short action would be just about perfect in my books. Works great on deer and as for hogs....we'll we've only got escaped pure strain Russian Wild boars and the .308 works fantastic. Buddies I've talked too actually prefer the .308 over their faster magnum deer rifles, if you hit the shield, less chance of the bullet just exploding and not penetrating.

Find the rifle that you like and then get what ever caliber it comes with. If all that is equal I would go for the 06 if you have closer shots because you can shoot bigger bullets with it. If not all close the 7mm would be my choice for its flat shooting.

.270 without a doubt. Plenty to put down either of these animals. Extremely accurate and flat shooting. I can't imagine shooting anything else. (except of course for elk LOL )

I have used a 7mm, and a 308 for deer, and I also live in NC. these deer dont really get big like up north it seems to me, so all you need is a 308. I never did like all that extra damage from the 7mm, to messy. the 308 has performed great up to 250 yards. For a hog, get a good bulldog and a sharp knife, its way more fun. take care.

I use a remington pump .308
not only does it get the job done but you can get reallllly fast follow up shots once you're used to it, and that could be the difference between gutting that deer/hog you shot or going to look for another one. obviously it also depends on your style of hunting and terrain.

my vote is the .308, but all 3 get the job done.

JR, of the three you mention just for deer? I would go with the .308.

I would pick the 30-06 for the game you described. It is one of the best all around cartridges and has a little bit more punch than the 308, which I also think is an excellent caliber.

I'd take a .308 loaded with a 165gr ballistic tip or partition anytime.

I busted a wild russian boar about a week ago with 110gr hornady SP's loaded around 2500fps for groundhogs. The shot was about 80yds and on a dead run, tore that pig up bad.
