RE: Albino Deer?

I've heard of white but never black.

Normally, from most sources I've read, a "true" albino will be all white with pinkish eyes. Other forms and mutations of whitails that have a mix of white and brown and/or black are called "piebalds". I think I spelled it right.

We have albino deer at Argonne National Lab in IL, and they are all white, and protected from hunting.

Keep 'em all in the Bull.

RE: Albino Deer?

Albino deer must be ENTIRELY white, with pink eyes. Any other deer that has white where it normally isn't is called a piebald. I have only ever seen one albino and one piebald in the wild. Both were from the same field about three years apart. Maybe the piebald was the albinos child!!! They are AWSOME looking though and I really would love to harvest a nice big albino buck. That would be awsome. Here is something to think about fellas. Just imagine what would happen if the next world record whitetail was albino. The guy would be so incredibly rich that it isn't even funny and he would probablly get all kinds of death threats.

P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

As well they should be.
It's illegal to shoot albino deer in Wisconsin , and being one that has hunted for 26 years and never seen an albino deer , I think they are rare enough that they should be protected. Kinda like the white buffalo. Just my ancestrial superstitions.

There are solid white deer that are not albino, like mentioned an albino will have pinkish eyes. A white deer with normal eyes is just a white deer, but in any case, still a beautiful animal. Both white and albinos can have a pinkish nose.
A piebald will be white with gray and or brown or vice versa.
A calico will be brown, black and gray.

I know people that have seen both Albino deer and a black deer. The black version is very very rare.

I have seen a piebald along the side of the NYS thruway. Its hind quarters were white.

The is a place in NY called the Seneca Army Depot. Its an old military installation, where something like 85% of the deer are Albinos. It's pretty neat. It's mostly fenced in, and no hunting is allowed.

I have only seen one piebald in my years of hunting, a really weird doe, the front half was black and white and the hind quarters were normal. This deer was a real freak, its front legs were so much shorter than its hind legs that it had to take two steps with the front for every one step with the back. I would have loved to have taken her, but it was bucks only when I saw her.

Most of your Albino, White and Piebalds are going to be a bit smaller then a regular size deer.

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, here hunters are spouse to shoot both albino and piebald on site. I’ve seen pics of 2 piebald harvested and my brother shot one last year. They were small and sickly looking and in the case of the buck its rack was malformed. I think our DNR wants them out of the gene pool.

Buck Magnet 01-09-2002 09:57 AM

RE: Albino Deer?

Yeah, you SHOULD shoot an albino or piebald on site. They are FREAKS! They are a very bad part of the genetics. Come on people, have you ever heard about the kid who shot a huge 10 point buck that was albino. A woman sued him because "it was her reincarnated husband" the judge threw it out because it was "a joke". An albino is JUST a deer. You can't eat that hide. Most people just toss it out.

After 32 years of hunting, saw TWO different albinos this year. A small 7 point and a yearling doe. Funny thing about the doe , she was with her mother and another yearling that was normal color, probably twins. The deer were not sickly looking, about normal size for the age. No one shot/checked either one this year. Could have killed either one this year but did not know regulations on them. Looking forward to next year.

my dad saw one about 5 years ago but i too think that here in Texas, we can shoot them year rouind if we see one. i think i read that they are genetically inferior also. they get the same rap as spikes around here.

I have not seen a albino deer, but yes there can be albino deer. Any thing can be an albino, with the exception of a few organisms. Albino is just a genetic mutation that does not allow the organism to produce melanine or any other pigments.

I do have some really cool colored deer that frequent my land. They are all bucks that are too small to shoot yet, and they have a real light wheat colored coat. Im curious what they are going to look like in a year or two.

I have seen one white buck. It was a blacktail in northern California. It spent the entire summer on a hill overlooking town. Never did hear what happened to it.

albinos have pink noses and eyes ive heard....and i think that deer with black on them are also caleld piebalds im not for sure on that though

RE: Albino Deer?

Albinos are caused by a recessive gene, meaning both the mother and the father must have this recessive trait to pass it on.

Albinos have no pigment, so no coloring in the eyes, nose, coat, etc.

I don't recall the extacts on piebalds, but have seen pics of neat ones.

In Evansville, IN there was an albino doe running around on the golf course right next to that sanctuary in town (200 acres). Saw another albino in the southern part of the Hoosier national forest.

As a note, albino humans have a hard time with daylight due to the pigment problems, they burn easier and the sun will bother their eyes. I learned this from a friend who worked for a rich banker who also suffered from this condition. So I wonder if albino deer have the same problem with daylight and are more comfortable at night?

I have only seen one albino deer in the wild. It was a yearling albino. I was so excited and it was really a great experience.
