urinating in stand

Do you carry a bottle with you or just go over the side? Do the deer notice it and are they alarmed? How about doing it in scrapes?

Icedragon 01-18-2005 12:24 PM

RE: urinating in stand

Dont *** on the ground because at first the smell of your **** still has a humanly scent in it and deer will notice it. After about a few hours though your **** will turn to amonia and it can be effective. Do not ***** in a bottle because it makes too much noise, what I do is **** in a plasic bag so it won't make noise.

The word is urinate or maybe pee. Anything else gets deleted.

I've had deer down wind and and I had to pee and they never noticed. I know a few who carry a bottle. but personally I just go..they dont seem to care so hey why not.

I agree urninated anytime on the ground during your hunt can prove to be a bad mistake. What I do is I pee before I even get to the stand, and if I have to pee I just wait it out.

I thought I would chime in on this from an experience I had yesterday. I was bowhunting from a makeshift ground blind yesterday and just had to go. I snuck out and went a few yards away. I was hunting the wind so it was right in my face all afternoon. About 30 min later I was looking at something to my left and when I turned and looked right A couple of does were 20 yards away. One got within 15 yards and saw me. She didn't know what I was so she was staring at me stomping the ground and snorting for 10 min. She actually got within 10 yards. She kept walking toward me. Needless to say in my screwing around I was not ready so didn't get a shot but she definately didn't wind anything. You just have make sure the wind is right but I think you should hunt the wind anyways.

I have ***** on a sappling in front of my tree and had deer walk up and start sniffing it 10 minutes later. There were some findings published a few years back where they tested scrapes in breeding enclsures where they used doe urine, buck urine, human urine, and a control substance in scrapes. The deer used the doe urine the most followed closely by the human urine and third was the buck urine. It was actually posted on this forum a few years back. Pee is pee and deer can't tell the difference.

I carry in a water bottle especially if I am going to be there for a while. The water serves 2 purposes. I drink it if thirsty and use it to help if my throat gets dry and I want to cough. Nothing is worse than having a deer coming into the stand and you nervous and get a dry throat and sit there fighting that feeling. I used to eat candy but the water works best and when the water is gone you can use the container to relieve yourself, screw the cap back on and bring it out. Problems solved.

I just let it go and kick some dirt on it. I seem to have to go about 3 times before lunch. It does not seem to mess me up, I have gotten near a lot of big deer lately.

i had asked the same question to our bioligist and he said that human urine doesnt bother the deer. they cant tell what it came from. they may know that it isnt farmilar but they dont asociate it with humans. also he said that as soon as urine hits the air bacteria starts to form and breaks it down quick. outside it usually has a 5 minute lifespan as far as potency. same with deer urine. it doesnt stay fresh. and im sure you have all used urine at one time or another and when yuo opened it it was brown. the color is because of the oxygen breaking it down and bacteria causes it to go stale almost immediatly

I use a bottle to pee in. I have heard of DEER coming in after a hunter has urinated on the ground, but have never heard of 140+ coming in to it!
I don't take any chances. I am out there to kill a trophy and after all the time I take to be as scent free as possible, I am not going to let ANY deer know that something is around by urinating on the ground! Just my opinion though.

go right where you hunt. doesn't bother the deer one bit. to them pee is pee. urine is fairly "clean" anyway. I hunt a lot on the ground and when I have to go I go. I usually trya and scrape some leaves back and cover it up just to be safe. Had a spot this year where i went several times and the deer kept coming by (some at <5 yards).

It's funny how our self-imposed rules about peeing go out the window when the urge gets overwhelming. My advice is try not to but if push comes to shove, let it go!.

I've had deer sniff my pee quite a few times and not once did it alarm them at all! Not once!! let it flow when you need to go the deer wont know!

According to Dr. Ken Norberg Deer can smell your urine very well, But the deer are unable to recognize that it is from a human. I still would not chance it.

It has to matter because they can smell he humanness in our pee.

RE: urinating in stand

I agree with the folks who said the deer can't tell. I try not to drink coffee before hunting ,but when you gotta go I go from the tree AND TRY TO MISS YOUR STAND. the chemicals in urine can quickly corrode your 200.00 stand if you forget to wipe it off. We have alot of water in Florida and when most urinate from the stand it goes into swamp water. The hard core hunters literally put their stands up in about one foot of brackish water.

Icedragon......humanness?.... Oh well.
I have peed next to and under my tower blind, climbed up in it and killed deer.
I have witnessed a mature buck actually sniff human poop (#2 in case we cant say poop)
WAY too much is made of scent in the hunting industry. You certainly dont want to be smelling like a French house of ill repute, but if you have to pee.........then pee.

Icedragon......humanness?
For obvious lack of a better word, now if thats all you can do is correct my grammar then you need to get the hell outta here!

RE: urinating in stand

Ice Dragon,
I was not the one who corrected your grammar. You e-mailed the wrong hunter. I don't really care what kind of grammar you use.
Chuck

I didnt say you were, take a look at who I replyed to and to who I quoted.

Ice......it's .....Whom I quoted. And you could say human scent instead of humanness.
In any event, I can assure you sir that I can do a lot more than correct your grammar so I'll not be getting the hell out of here anytime soon.
The gentleman asked a question about peeing in a deer stand and I lent my considerable knowledge and experience to the conversation.
Thank you, that is all.

I was just wondering if your related to Luke Reddish.

Not to my knowledge. I don't know many Reddish's. My Father left when I was 2, contact with that side of the family has been slim to none throughout my life.
