Thanks,

It may be one thing or several. The One Thing would be attend to the very basics. The subheadings under that would be: be still, be quiet, put in the time in the woods and practice your shooting beforehand.

All the other stuff is very, very secondary. Just MHO!

There are a lot of things that go into a successful hunt and even more that goes into being successful year after year. But none of it means a lick if you don't put the time in the woods necessary to find the animal you are looking for. You can have the best scent control, best cammo, be able to move without sound ad be able to shoot the wing off a fly at 1000 yds but it don't mean a thing if you don't invest the time actually being in the woods. The more time you spend in the woods the better hunter you'll be. Because not only are you finding more game but ever encounter with game and game sign only hones your skills more and more. But then again I hunt out West in the Rockies. I don't what it's like hunting over a corn feeder.

For me it's knowing my limitations first! I guess I could see the Ole' 30 pointer and have a perfect shot and not be able to capitalize would suck! Know your weapons of choice! Good luck everybody and enjoy it!
As well as all of the above!:D Practice!
Excellent post!:)

A place that has deer of course
and time spent ,every moment of the season you can possibly hunt. if possible everyday all day.
If you want a deer ?? in deer seaon everyrhting is secondary to hunting

#1 thing- determination and self confidence. gotta have the confidence in your self. if you say that you can put the arrow in the 10 ring, you're gonna do it. if you think you're going to miss, chances are, you're gonna make a bad shot. also, as far as gunning for big whitetails, its A: Luck and B:Location. The guys who shoot big bucks consistently have the right location. everybody shoots a decent buck once or twice. it takes a helluva hunter to kill 150"+'s every year.

For myself its dedication. The time i spend scouting and patterning especially elk is just rediculous but it pays off. Slept over in the stand opening day with a broken hand and an Iv needle in the other but stuck it out and got my elk. You spend enough time out there things will go your way eventually.

Number of hours spent in the woods. If im in a tree 8 hours a day 5 days a week, i've surely got a better chance of a nice buck walking thru my shooting lane if i only go out two or three times a week.

i think the one thing that contributes to everybody's success is attitude. If you have the right attitude, then everything else will fall in line, but without the right attitude towards something, it doesnt get done right.

Location, Location, Location. You cant kill big bucks on a regular basis if your area dosent produce them.

RE: #1 thing that contributes to your success?

The #1 key to my success is knowledge of the game that you are hunting and I owe a lot of what I know to the people of this board. Knowledge is key to success in anything you do in life including hunting. If you don't know how to look for sign and pattern the animals movements, it all boils down to luck. But if you can put yourself in "the right place at the right time" by scouting, you're increasing that so called "luck" by 150%.

Time put in the woods contributes to my success, and also confidence in the spot your hunting i think plays the major role in filling a tag. Oh and also having good deer numbers too helps a bunch!

90 % pure LUCK(being in the right place at the right time) 10% skill.

thats why i hunt 60+ days a year.

Being persistant and staying focused for as long as possible while in the deer woods. Some say spending time in the woods, which is certainly correct. I feel that 4 hours of time spent hunting while I'm focused and alert is better than 10 laxidasical hours.

The more skill you have the less luck you need. The more deer you have around the less luck you need. If you had good scouting, prep and skill, then you wouldn't need 60 days to kill a deer.

i dont need 60 days to kill a deer. i do need 60+ to take 10-15 deer.

RE: #1 thing that contributes to your success?

If you are taking 10-15 deer, you need to give yourself more credit in the skill department. Luck may buy you a couple, but you are obviously got your stuff together, and you've got a good spot.

Passion. It gives me the drive to practice, sit still, scout often and to hunt hard. I agree with the statement that the more skill you have, the less luck you need. I couldn't win a lottery if I was the only one playing, so my luck sucks. but I manage to put meat in the freezer year after year.

RE: #1 thing that contributes to your success?

Preparation I would say. I know pretty vague and pretty large encompassment with many subsets. However preperation is the key to a number of things already mentioned - Location, Location, Location is very important this can be determined by scouting. When scouting you may actually already know the buck or bucks you are targeting, this allows you to practice patience in knowing what is in the area. Ability to read sign in scouting and prepare appropriately for the hunt is a big part of the puzzle. Practicing to be proficent with your equipment, set up, etc - again falls into preparation. The list does go on.....

I personally feel we make our own luck, if you put yourself in the right place to begin with you'll experience more success.

A very close second would be knowledge/experience. While the scouting and sign finding is part of the prep portion, the ability to interpret is based on your knowledge/experience of the game/habits. It could equally fall into the prep side as many spend hours gaining new knowledge/in sight into the game they pursue.

I have to say probably the number one thing would have to be where I hunt,, we have a family farm and I have several food plots along with lots of thick brush, mature timber and lots of white oaks,, I am spoiled by our farm, it is the biggest factor in my hunting success, second would be having the time, patience, and confidence to make it all come together.

Preparation...it seems to cover everything for me. Be it scouting, stand placement, wind and weather, scent control....and the list goes on and on. If I have a good idea of what I'll do during the next days hunt and be flexible if conditions change, things go well for me. Too often I miss an opportunity due to a stupid mistake that leads back to that days preparation ( or patience ).

Our nominees are:
1) Ability with my weapon of choice
2) Proper scouting and stand location
3) Staying still and quiet for long, long periods of time

And the award goes to....

Proper scouting and stand location! If I know where the deer are going to be, and set up properly on them, everything else comes easy.

Being patient, being quiet, moving as little as possible in my ground blind. Also, waiting until the deer gives me a good shot.
