Welcome to Georgia Rob. You might want to check out the DNR website and see what WMAs might be near you.

Good luck from Southwest Georgia and on occassions Northeast Georgia.

I also live in roswell though im in carrollton at school right now. It's to late for wma registration atleast for the quota hunts, but there is corps of engineering land down at west point lake that you can buy a permit for 10 bucks. It's bow hunt only though. Im also lookin for land as the area i used to hunt was sold and has been cleared allready.

Welcome Jake. I have lived near Roswell and have done some hunting on public land up north. I usually hunt Oconee NF near Macon, but when it closes in December for a few weeks I often go to the Chattahoochee NF west of Dahlonega. I dont always hunt the WMAs, but there are a lot of them mixed in with the NF tracts. I recommend buying a map of Chattahoochee National Forest, which you can buy at the Ranger station in Dahlonega. The number there is 706-864-6173. You can also go to the website http://www.gohuntgeorgia.com/ for info.
The only thing about some of the northern counties is that there are less either-sex days. But I kind of like hunting in the mountains. There are bears, mountain lions, etc.

Good luck

I tried to respond to this yesterday morning and the site went T/U just as I hit the submit button and I didn't have time to do it again at that time.
The maps mentioned are no longer available at the Dahlonega USFS Information center, you have to get them in Gainesville. There is a map available at Walmart of all the WMAs in North Georgia which is pretty good but doesn't have as much detail as far as contours is concerned. From Roswell, you are closer to the Dawson Forest WMA than anything else and that may be a good place to start for this year although it does get a lot more pressure (691 hunters checked in last week on 25,000 acres) than most of the others in the area. There is also Blue Ridge WMA just west of Dahlonega with 39000 acres of good hunting and not as much pressure, plus Coopers Creek, Chatahoochee, Dicks Creek and several others within a reasonable drive from Roswell. Send me a PM and I will be glad to help out with additional information. Good hunting and welcome to "Them Thar Hills"

Welcome, neighbor! I live up the road from you in Cumming. It borders Alpharetta, which borders Roswell. You're close to the Dawson National Forest and Not too far from the Wilson shoals WMA. I've just started hunting and could use someonre to hunt with. Drop me a line and I'll tell you what I know. (Ain't a lot, mind you, but I'm willing to share!)-Ed

Thanks Guys, with the responses that I have recieved in the last few days just enforces the reason why my wife and I want to move back to Georgia. NO better hospitality to be found as far as I'm concerned. I'll be up in Roswell starting Monday for two weeks. Then I have to come back to florida while they get the paperwork together for the final job offer. Hopefully I will get a few minutes while I am up there to look around a bit.

EAMONT, My aunt lives in Cummings. My mother was in town visiting her when Hurricane Ivan came thru and she said that area is just beautiful.

I'll give you fair warning, I was raised in Maine. You dont call me Yankee and I'll be your best friend. Just kidding. The hunt club that I hunted at down near Jesup and Savanah was a good group of guys altough my partner brian and I were the only two not born within 30 miles of the club, They called him "Yankee" and I was refered to as "Yankee's buddy, THE OTHER YANKEE". LOL

I've done a bit of hunting from stands but I was raised as a tracker.

Don't worry about me calling you a yankee, and I won't have to hear being called a rookie. I've just started hunting. I was worried as to having to hunt solo. I'm probably going to stick to a ground blind or stalking. I wouldn't use a treestand unless I was hunting with someone else. Anyhow, I'm glad you're moving down. I work predominantly weekends, but can arrange to trade off if I can get some advanced notice. Reply to me at my e-mail and I'll get you my address and phone, so if you do get a chance, we can hook up and scout. I've already got topos for the Dawson Forest and Wilson Shoals WMA. Look forward to hearing from you.-Eddie
