I am thinking of building a small cabin on my hunting property after the season. I know it is early to think about, but I am one of those guys that can't get things off his mind untill I know what I want to do. I want something small and simple. No lights or water. I just want something that will hold two cots, a small wood stove, and all of my hunting supplies. I've seen tents that fit what I want. Mainly the Cabela's Alaknak, but I want to make one of wood. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has made their own hunting shack/cabin

I'm sure RonM can give you good advice. He's made a bunch of small cabins.

I built mine based on the plans from this site: http://www.townandcountryplans.com/ they are kind of basic but give you ideas.
I based mine off the Mackenzie. I have alot of other pics. It is solar powered and has a rain water collection system. Built it at home in sections and brought it down and put together. Upstairs is bunk areas. Added the room addition this year with another bedroom, living room, indoor shower and closet.

I built mine a year ago this month....it is 16 by 16, has an 8foot deep porch, and a 8/12 pitch roof. Its built on a slab. I used 2x4 framed walls and t-111 siding, insulated walls and cieling. The cieling is a vaulted ciling with a pan at 12 feet. I had the drywall mudded and taped but I did the rest. Its wired for power but I have not run the power in. I can hook up or a solar/inverter battery to run a couple lightbulbs. Its heated with a wood stove

very sharp cabin wooddust. That is very similar to what I want to do. Same size and all. I am worried about building it at this time of year. I don't want to spook the deer that much, but I am definitely looking forward to getting it started. It is one of those things that pops in your head too late to do anything about. I guess it gives me plenty of time to plan though.

Well...here is something to consider....I was roofing the cabin last fall, sleet falling, working like a man possessed cause I had to get it dried in.....while im on the roof pounding nails, cussin, slippin, dropping shingles.....there were 14 turkeys about 45 yards away...everytime I would get a good run going nailing, the birds would fight, gobble, cluck, putt...I mean it was wild.

And....I had deer come up to about 10 yards of the cabin and turkeys that actually walked across the porch (tracks in snow)....

Build it....dont worry about spooking the deer.

Unless you're a carpenter by trade I would just buy a small camper and maybe build a small shed for a sitting area with a wood stove. The camper will also be portable and probably cheaper.

It took basically 4 days to get walls up, roof on, windows in, etc....

One weekend we did the soil work....rented bobcat, then formed for the concrete.
That week, the concrete was done...i paid a concrete guy cause I knew the floor would be a mess if I did it.

The next weekend, we framed two walls on one day, two the next plus rafters..(me n 2 helpers)
The next weekend we roofed and did the porch roof.( me and one helper)

Took me two days working alone to drywall, wire, insulate, install woodstove

Painted last deer season when we had 75 degree days .

You can do a lot yourself, cost is dependent on what you pay to have done. And what you pay for concrete and stove. Stove can be 150 bucks for junk to 700 for a great castiron unit
