Just my opinion but why would it matter how a deer was taken to get in a record book?I shoot deer for me not because i need to be included in a record book.If what you use is a legal method you should be proud of what you accomplished even if a record book doesnt recognize it.

You are all right, but there is something about having your name in a record book, because your average hunter will not see alot of record animals. It just makes it a little more special.

I love to hunt. Most often if I were to shoot the first legal deer that I got in my sights, I would be done hunting very soon. I would be a "successful" hunter but not a happy one because my deer hunting would be over for the year.

So I tell myself I am not going to even think about shooting a doe till the last day or so of the season. I am not at all interested in shooting a small or medium sized buck. (I'd rather shoot a doe for some venison as the smaller bucks will grow up to be big bucks)

Then it boils down to "What size of buck will I be happy putting my tag on and ending my season?" That is where record books come in. I have desided that I will wait for a monster, wallhanger, record book type deer.

Some years I don't shoot any buck. But I have killed two B&C bucks with centerfire rifles and two Longhunter record book bucks with my muzzleloader. And best of all I have spent many many days afield hunting deer.

I am not a trophy hunter and the only way you would ever see my name in a book would be if I shot a state or world record buck. The list is a money maker for B&C and P&Y. You do not get your name in the book unless you pay for it. I killed a monster 8 point in 74 that would have easily made the Va. B&C book, but it was not the biggest ever in Va. so why waste my money. Do not get me wrong, if I have the choice between two bucks and one is bigger than the other the big one is going down! We have a ton of deer in Va. and can shoot up to three bucks and almsot all the doe you want as long as you buy bonus tags. Think about the number of HUGE racks you have seen hung in some oldtimers house that you know would easily make the book and in some cases maybe even be a state record. They did not kill the deer for a state record, they just mounted it because it was a beautiful big buck. I would be willing to bet money that there is a world record buck hanging in some old hunters house right now, that will never make the book.

Huntflinger00 95% of record book animals are shot by guys that never knew they were there.

Hmm…..

I guess it’s just a matter of your own Priorities.
Let’s face it if you just want to make in the record books you can buy your way in.
There are plenty of ranches around that have record bucks that you can KILL for a price. (Notice the use of the word KILL -vs- hunt)

This is not the case for the vast majority of people in the record books. Most are very skilled hunters that should be admired.

But, I think that what makes a trophy is a personal matter.
This year I Took a good sized 7 point buck. (Darn that missing tine)
It is the first buck that I’ve gotten on my own property, which I bought in the spring.
Because of that it represents not just a hunt, but 10 years of hard work.
I will hang it proudly on my wall, and it will be MY trophy forever.
