.270 or 7mm-08 get my vote.

In my part of NY, I can only use a shotgun, handgun or bow while deer hunting. For that I use my Rem 870 express magnum 12 guage with a Simmons 4x32 scope. Rifled slug barrel and 2 3/4 sabots.

I don't own a rifle yet but I think I will purchase a 30-06 since it seems to be the general consesus that it is the most versatile for hunting big game species. For varments I want to get a .223.

.308 is going to do more damage than a .30-06, it's just not as fast. It's nice because it's a short action, but I prefer my flat shooting .30-06 over my girlfriends .308 mauser any day. If you can find someone to handload your shells with light bullets, a .30-06 won't do as much damage as your deer shells are on varmints. IMHO I don't think that a person could ever consider the .308 better than a .30-06, cuz some day you're going to see that monster out at 300 yrds, and what would you rather be shooting, I'd pick my .30-06.

My Remington .06 does the job here in Michigan

I like My 445 supermag Dan Wesson. But if you have to use a rifle than I would say 260 rem or 6mm of some kind.
