RE: Hunting Stories
I think I posted this once here but...This year opening morning of gun hunting. It was really foggy where we were, and about 7:00 am I hear crunch crunch crunch, but I can't see anything. Then at about 30 yards I see a big bodied deer walking right at me. I sat still so he wouldn't catch me. At about 20 yards all I see is horns...big horns. It walks to 15 yards turns behind a tree, so I get the gun up without it seeing me. It steps out, broadside at 15 yards and stops, puts its head down and starts to munch on leaves. I was mostly thinking "Boy, this one will look great above the fireplace." So I settle in on the shoulder take a deep breath (He's still eating, broadside in the open) pull the trigger....CLICK. I never saw a deer run so fast...I swear his ass passed his head. By the time I got another shell chambered he was gone, never got him in the scope again. Anyway, I fired the ejected shell later and it worked fine..there was no firing pin mark on it. I figure as I walked out in the dark, the action of my 30.06 rubbed on my side and opened up the chamber just enough that the firing pin never connected. It was either an eight or ten pointer (I think 10), but really wide...I'd guess about 18". Biggest deer I ever saw hunting, and easiest shot I could ever wish for. I got a six that afternoon, but I still have dreams about that deer.

RE: Hunting Stories
Well, I blew it a couple of times when I was hunting during my short career. My first year I was making a push with my dad and brother and my bro. had a .22. Then he saw a deer 1 yard away, laying down, he said something but all we could hear was the sounds of a frightened boy, so I sat down on a log. Then my dad, finally understanding that there was a deer next to him started running toward him. The croch-horn jumped up and ran behind us and I got up twirled around and aimed with my open sights and pulled the trigger. Nothing. I forgot the safty! Then I flicked off the safty and shot and excited shot but no contact was maded.
That year I got a small button-buck. Then last season I didn't really blow it but I missed a chance at a b&c with a bow. Well, I baught a bow and after school I went hunting with it for the first time. I was have a lot of action around me but nothing within 20yrds.(I only set my bow for 20yrds.)There was the 10pt. p&y 40yrds. away, chasing does, and 2 deer behind me. Finally one of the deer behind ran in front of me and hid in a group of trees, the 2nd deer followed his trail slower so shot and hit. The 1st went to his blood trail and smelt it so I nocked another arrow and shot him too. But now I wish I used my grunt tube to call in the p&y. Because I heard one of the other guys that hunts the area shot a big p&y in the area. Later that season, my bro. shot his first deer, a 4pt. buck, and I dropped a 10pt. buck but he wouldn't make it into b&c. So I did good sometimes and bad other times but this season I am looking forward to taking 2 p&y that i have been scouting for. |

RE: Hunting Stories
Greets,
All good stories, cant say mine blew a shot but it was still a mistake made and therefore learning experience. My hunting partner shoots abolt .270, with the common trap door magazine. We got out of the truck one morning a couple years back, loaded up and head off up the trail ( closed road actually ) to the stands. about 5 minutes up the raod his ammo drops out of the mag onto the very wet ground.. he hadnt snapped the door closed right and the realease wasnt held. made lotsa noise, but as I said no deer in the sights to loose. Just my uneducated opinion! Terry |
