I have seen a few threads on knives but wasn't sure which one I wanted. A lot of folks like the buck, but I heard they were hard to sharpen, so I decided to stay away. I went to the bass pro shop and they had a large selection of many knives. I asked to see the most popular knife for deer/hog, etc. and he handed me a Buck Vanguard. As I said, I was against buck, but this knife is awesome. Rubber handle, extremely!!! sharp blade and nice feel. I also liked the Schrade 143OT Guthook with the Safe T Grip (rubber) but the blade was not nearly as sharp as the buck, but still sharp. I purchased both, they were $50 and $20, respectively. Both are fixed blade knives with 4 inch blades.

Theres nothing wrong with Buck Knives. I've had the Buck #103 skinner for years. It's sharpens right up hitting it on a steel.Last year I bought a Cold Steel with the gut hook.It seems to hold a good edge so far.Hope you get a chance to wear them out.Ruger Redhawk

I have a ton of knives and can't really complain about any of them. I think I can get my old Case the sharpest though. I also got the Schrade Knife with the gut hook and cleaned about five deer with it this year and it is still sharp. Can't beat that one for the price $20.00.

I've been using the same Coleman/Western skinning knife for about twenty years now. It cost about 12 dollars back then, and has served me well! I've looked at the Buck knives, they are good!I just can't turn loose of my old C/W though!

Buck Knives "might" be a little harder to sharpen, but with that ssaid they hold an edge like you wont believe. I've boned out 3 deer with a buck "special purpose" and it still has the original edge. You'll love that buck.

It's too late for this advice but the Schrade Sharpfinger is the best knife I have ever used. It holds an edge like nothing I have ever used before and I use my knife to cut the sternum rather than saw it. It takes an edge better than any knife I have ever sharpened.

I ve been using a case 5" fixed blade for years. it has the laminated leather handle. i have been a case fan ever since i got this knife.

Case knives are my favorite I have two that I use .

I use a Lansky sharpener on my knives, and you can shave with them. My favorite is a Buck 110.
