State considers becoming first to ban .50-caliber rifle
Silver cites attack fears, but target shooters say weapons are ill-suited for such purposes

ALBANY -- The civilian counterpart of the .50-caliber firearm that became a war movie icon is being recast by some as a tool of terrorism.

On Tuesday, California's Contra Costa County approved a ban on the sale of the heavy, powerful .50-caliber firearms outside incorporated municipalities. Supporters said they hope to use the measure to leverage a broader ban, such as proposed earlier in the state legislature and in Illinois.

In New York, a ban on the sale of the large-bore firearms favored by upscale competitive shooters has become an anti-terrorism priority for the Democrats who rule the Assembly. Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said Wednesday he is considering what would be the nation's first state ban.

"The .50-caliber weapon is capable of shooting planes out of the sky, piercing armor," said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat who represents the lower-Manhattan area hit in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"Fifty-caliber guns have no legitimate purpose, and to keep them legal is supporting keeping them legal for terrorists and others," Silver said.

John Robertson of the 4,000-member worldwide 50 Caliber Shooters Association based in Monroe, Utah, said a .50-caliber firearm is too heavy, too hard to conceal and creates too little damage to be a terrorist tool. He said the bullet creates a half-inch hole and doesn't splinter to create further damage as in smaller-caliber bullets.

"We have a better safety record than your local high school cheerleading team," Robertson said.

The rifles shoot a large bullet and are accurate to within four inches at 1,000 yards at supersonic velocity, then carry more than two miles with declining accuracy. The forerunner is the .50-caliber machine gun that has been used in the military worldwide since World War I, but today's rifles available on the legal market are often single shot, bolt-action firearms.

Today, the rifles cost between $2,000 and $11,000, can weigh 50 pounds and are most often used by target shooters in competitions nationwide. Occasionally, they are used in big-game hunting in Africa, Alaska and some western states.

"If a target shooter wants them, why not?" said Ron Neudecker, who has sold a few of the rifles from his Neudecker's Guns & Ammo in Lansingburgh.

Would this make 50 cal muzzleloaders illegal??

WTF??.......it seems like they are after some huge powerful target models that weigh in excess of 50lbs but it's crap like this that opens the door to getting your hunting rifle taken away next.

RE: NY considers ban on 50 caliber rifles

You're right, they will try to include the .50 cal muzzle loaders. When will they figure out that terrorists don't care if a gun, bomb, knife, etc is legal to own or not. There has never been nor will there ever be a crime committed because the tool used in the crime was legal to have. People who break the law and commit crimes won't stop commiting crimes because the tools they use become illegal. Private citizens with the right to own such firearms is more of a detterent than anything else to a terrorist. With ownership of any firearm, there comes responsibility and a responsible firearm owner is more of a threat to a terrorist than our government.

This follows the anti-gunners MO, and adgenda to a tee! They are again singling out one type of gun, (usually something out of the mainstream of popularity, with a smaller following) label it as dangerous, and seek to get us to "compromise!"
This is a large, bulky, and expensive type of gun, and probably has not, and will not be a criminal, or terrorists choice of guns! But what does that matter to the anti's? It is a big, "scary" gun, with few owners, and it is also not a "hunting" gun! It is the perfect gun to go after in the name of "compromise!"
Going after these types of weapons, is the old divide and conquer method of attack! They figure that not many people have these guns, so the fight will be easy!
Banning these guns, or any guns for that matter, will not stop one single crime!
We do not need ANY more gun laws! As gun owners, we need to draw the line, and say "NO MORE GUN LAWS"
Punishing criminals, stops crime! Punishing guns, invites crime!
We need to stick together, or they will ban all our guns one at a time!

I appreciate your passionate stance on gun control and your concerns about the targeting of specific firearms by anti-gun advocates. It's true that discussions on this topic often involve differing opinions and agendas. While you emphasize the importance of unity among gun owners and the belief that punishing criminals, rather than restricting firearms, is the key to reducing crime, it's essential to acknowledge that the issue of gun control is multifaceted. Public safety, individual rights, and societal well-being are all factors that need to be considered in these discussions. Finding common ground and engaging in constructive dialogue can help foster a better understanding of the complexities surrounding gun control and work towards effective solutions.

Are you crazy??? There is no common ground nor constructive dialog with these ignorant nitwits who have no experience with firearms nor do they care about the 5th amendment and constitutional rights, They just pander to to fear.

The bigger concern for some seems to be the potential domino effect. If this ban is passed, could it pave the way for restrictions on hunting rifles in the future? This is a common worry among gun rights advocates, and it's worth considering the long-term implications of any gun control legislation.

hunters_life 05-06-2024 11:02 AM

What concerns me more is the fact that a lot of people seem to think that the second amendment is about your rifles for "hunting". The second amendment isn't about your right to hunt. It is about your right to defend yourself against both foreign AND DOMESTIC villainy. That is inclusive of out of control government which is why the government is working so hard to take that 2nd amendment right away from you. The first and second amendments are our defense against a tyrannical government. 1rst is for speaking out against such tyranny to gain support and the second is to defend the first.

My belief is that the second amendment is absolutely clear and that the government has absolutely NO legal right to interfere in ownership or carry of ANY weapon that military personnel can carry into battle. The second amendment was designed for us to be able to defend ourselves against both foreign and domestic militaries. Fighting with what we are currently allowed to own without going through tons of paperwork and intrusive investigations and money is pretty much like taking a knife to a gunfight.

Oldtimr 05-06-2024 12:32 PM

The 2nd amendment is what allows the other amendments to survive. That is why the left has been trying so hard for years to water it down or get rid of it. Just one example of their desperation is joining up with the stinking UN to disarm us. Vote for a democrat is a vote to destroy our constitution!!
