fav. shotgun
Hey every1 i was just wondering what your favorite shotgun is for deer hunting??? Well i live in Indiana so im not allowed to use rifles anyways.
Even though im only 13 years old i have set my mind one one shotgun. My Youth Remington 20ga 870express. Its reliable and has never broke down on me. I also like the size, small, so it is more versitile in lack of a better word. I can also use that shotgun for about anything else : birds, rabbits, coyotes. You name it. |
RE: fav. shotgun
Sure Shot, you wised up at a very early age. You can't go wrong with the 870. I bought mine brand new back in the early 70's for $128.00 and still use it to this day. It has the 26" improved choke and can throw a slug into a pie plate @ 100 yrds consistantly using nothing more than a ventilated rib, heck I can remember the couple times I had to fetch the dang thing from a river bottom while duck huntin. Down right cold during duck season. ;) Bobby

There are more exspensive shotguns, but there are none better than a 870. Sure I like the BPS and the Benelli's, but they aren't better.

RE: fav. shotgun
another vote for the 870. very durable IMO, much more than the mossberg 500

RE: fav. shotgun
When I was getting into hunting (dove), I visited three stores, and all sales clerks (all experienced hunters, by the way) recommended the 870 Express. That's what I bought, and I think it's probably the best shotgun for the money anywhere.

RE: fav. shotgun
Maybe I got a lemon, but that Remington always jammed up after a couple of shots....then fine for a few then a jam then fine for a few then another jam. It was properly disassembled and cleaned after every use and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't function properly....I traded it for my BPS and have no problems putting a case of shells through it before cleaning with no jams at all. Frankly, it's never once given me a problem in the least.
However, I can buy a new 870 with a slug barrel for less than I can buy a slug barrel for my BPS....I may need a slug gun this fall, so I may buy an 870. I think I just got a lemon, but it was frustrating to say the least. With so many being produced and so many happy owners of 870's somebody's bound to get a bad one now and again....just wish it wasn't me!;) |
RE: fav. shotgun
I also have an 870, I have the SPS 870 super express. I love it. I had a Remington 1100, when they made the all synthetic stock, that jammed up all the time. With my other two that are pump guns I have not had any problems.

RE: fav. shotgun
Yep, 870 Wingmaster--2¾" chamber, 26" bbl., fixed imp. cyl. choke. I use slugs rather than buckshot for deer, but I just switch to my screw-in choke barrel for turkey and small game.

RE: fav. shotgun
Even though I have a Mossberg 500 12 ga with a fully rifled barrel and a cantilever scope mount that allows me pretty good groups at 70-90 yards..I prefer an old bolt action 16 ga with a long improved cylinder....It shoots very well out to around 60-75 yards, and it's balance and function are great...I only have some bright orange iron sights on it..but it is a good comfortable shooter. I don't shotgun deer hunt much anymore...I just use my muzzle-loader which is legal here during the shotgun season.
