Illegal hunting on TV!!!
I was watching Backland outdoors on TV today and they were deer hunting in Iowa. Two hunters in different stands were talking over 2-way radios which, unless the laws just changed, is illegal!!! Wanted to know if anyone caught this show and what you guys think of it.

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
Have you consulted the Iowa F&G website to confirm this ?
Indiana allows radios while hunting , but not for driving game or otherwise assisting the hunt . I think they presumed that folks either wanted them for safety , or just to make more noise in the blind . :D |
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
I don't know of any states that outlaw radios when you are hunting for safety and communication. They only make it against the law to use them to help you get game. In other words, you can't say: "Hey Tom, there is a big buck about to come over the ridge, get ready" but you can say: "Hey Tom, I will meet you at the old hicory stump for lunch at 12:00" or: "I broke my leg, come and get me!"

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
I guess I better check laws better in some states I hunt. I've been known to participate on confrence calls while in my hunting stand.:) I think it falls under multi-tasking.

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
You should come down to Jersey and put the radio on scan for the opener as it's loads of fun to listen to all kinds of guys talking/whispering/complaining/etc.
Last year I heard some shots on the next lease and quickly put the radio on scan. I heard these guys saying that they missed a decent sized buck and that he was headed our way. Needless to say, the deer come over the ridge and my buddy was able to nail the buck. |
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
The famous Babe Winkelman recently got fined for doing this very thing.

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
Glad to know there are law hounds watching TV shows, call and get them arrested
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
not sure why it would even be illegal.if it is in some states then the tv people should be fined just like anyone else.it is not illegal in texas.this is actually the first time i ever heard it wqas illegal

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
If you are hunting together with somebody else, doesn't that extra set of eyes/ears give you more of an advantage than a guy on a radio who is 1/2 mile away? Sure, it depends on the type of terrain that you hunt, but where I hunt it's so thick that somebody could radio me and say, "There's a nice buck coming right for you", but there's a good chance that I'd never even see that deer.
Does anybody else agree with me? In most cases, those radios don't give much of an added advantage to the hunter in my opinion. |
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
I agree Jimbo, even if a friend came on and said,"Theres a huge buck coming right for you!" whats saying that buck won't turn, or stop someplace to bed down? Especially if your, a 1/2 mile away. I'm not trying to tell anyone that thier wrong, im just stating my opinion. Or in other words, "just my two cents"

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
it is legal in Utah. Interesting first I had ever heard of it. hmm
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
This is a man made law, and this law has nothing to due with a hunters ethics whatsoever.
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
How about: "Jim - I can see you across the valley, the 12 point is bedded to your downhill to your left left, about 50 yards out - get ready - I'll whistle and see if I can get it to stand up.................bang"
I'm sure the intent of the law is to avoid stuff like this - I'm not sure how easy it would be to enforce - do they have to tape the conversation? How do they verify who is talking? Anyhow - I doubt there is much enforcement going on - or even needed. |
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
Radios can be a big help on drives. The drivers start clicking away on their radios when they get deer moving, and the standers know when to really pay attention.
I don't use radios at all, I hunt alone mostly. If I hunt with someone, its stand hunting. |
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
Oh yeah, some of the hunting shows aren't really much more than guys sitting in blinds shooting animals that are one step away from livestock. They may even be behind high fences. In NH, where I used to live, you didn't even need a hunting license to shoot animals (Except bird species) in that situation. Obviously you didn't have to follow any other Game laws either.

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
There was an article about Babe in the Sunday paper here in Wisconsin, as Minnesota is our neighbor this was big news.
Anyway a rep from the WI DNR said that we can use a radio to say "hey dad, big buck coming your way" but we can not say "Hey dad, I just shot a big buck, can you come over and tag him?" In WI you must be within shouting or visual range of another hunter in order to harvest a deer for him in our "party hunting" rules. I was surprized I thought we were the same as mn, that it can only be used for saftey issues. |
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
Yeah who cares! If all they were doing is using 2-way radios then let it be. There are a heck of alot of worst things that happen. JMO

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
i would be more concerned about things like driving the deer. what is hunting about that? a hunter sits and waits till someone pushes a deer in front of him. geesh!!
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
In our state radios are legal but must not be used in any way to assist in taking game. Its sort of a joke though as when people have them they are pretty apt to misuse them.
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
It's legal in Montana to have use two way radios for non hunting related issues. Helping your buddy out to find an animal is illegal though.
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
To clarify this...The Iowa law says that you cant use them to assist in anyway, whether it be directing other hunters or saying the direction of an animal. I looked it up.

RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
babe winklemen got busted about 25 miles from my house on a drive so i dont know wat the deal is on that
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
The show is question is pretty pathetic anyways....very tasteless. The Outdoor Channel would do well to can it.....
|
RE: Illegal hunting on TV!!!
dont get caught in Ohio with a 2 way. you will be fined on the spot. you can carry a cell phone for safty reasons but that's it. any nextel two ways and you are busted. i think it has been brought up the last several years to let hunters carry 2 way radio's but they still do not allow it.
