Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I do most of my hunting on public land(which sucks for big bucks) I Cant afford to go on a guided hunt. These hunts for a trophy buck can run up to $5000.00. The future of hunting is going to be for Doctors, Lawyers, and corporate america!!!!

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
umm, sure, I guess. I know private lands tend to have much larger deer, but so what? I hunt to have fun and I have fun on public lands. I'd like to do a guided hunt sometime, but I'm not in a rush. I just want to have fun!

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I wish that hunting was still the way it was in the begining of the U.S.. American men, venturing out into the brush and taking game at only the cost of their rifles and bullets. That is the way I hunt, but I realize that not all people have the option of hunting their own land or other private properties. Thank God for the country and rural areas.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Well put shedmanpyro. I would just like to add that I also bowhunt public land. Yeah it's tough and it takes alot of work. You really have to get out there and do ALOT of scouting. I like to go back as far as I can. Where your average bowhunter will not hunt. Especially a thick marsh. When I put in all that work and the end result is venison in my freezer (buck or doe) that's priceless.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I agree you can put some money in to it if you want to keep up with the Jones, But I'm just your every day average Joe who asked a farmer who owned about 30 acers of woods on the back side of his corn field if I could hunt it and he said sure . I have harvested a couple real nice bucks out of there always keeping the farmer in mind when the meat comes back we got to be pretty good friends. So you don't really have to be rich Just ask.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Makes me glad I hunt where I do.Permission to hunt private land is easy to get at no charge.
|
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
The access to hunt up here is great. Not many people, because the pay up here is terrible. People are moving out at an amazing rate, which means plenty of room to hunt. If you own your own bussiness consider North Dakota as a great place to set up shop. Low crime rate, great place to raise kids. Room to roam.
|
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Maybe you should try to scout more or find a different area where you hunt. And also try to intercept them on the trails leading into the private land. Try talking to the land owner in the spring and summer then just knocking on his door during hunting season. It sounds like you've been watching to many hunting videos where they hunt on ranches, and game preserves.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Can deer really tell the difference between private and public lands? do they know land lines? around here they dont!
|
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Join a hunting club. I really enjoy mine. Deer hunting(still and dog), turkey hunting, dove fields plenty of wood duck action, fish ponds and Brier Creek. Not to mention a great bunch of guys. All for $370 and three work days a year.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Mr LB I hunt because I enjoy it and the people I hunt with. I just don't have the time to worry about who can afford a guided hunt and whether its hunting or not because I can't afford it . I don't know if that was the way you meant the post ,but that is the way it sounds .

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I noticed not one Texan responded to this post.I lived there for 7 years and them poor boys usually dont have a choice .They have to pay to hunt or pay to lease land or they dont hunt.If someone can afford it goody for them.If you cant well then public land is the option.I'd rather not pay if I dont have to though. Some of the prices are getting out of hand.5000 for a huge buck is to much for me ,but just check around there places that charge 10 and 15 thousand for a 180 plus score buck. Our country is a free enterprise country and huntin has become a enterprise. There must be people out there paying the prices cause them places are always booked up.weather we like it or not its here. And if someone can afford 10,000 for a trophy buck, well so be it.Its part of living in a free enterprise economy.Nothing is FREE

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Glad I live where I do could not afford to hunt like that I would have to stick to fishing if it was that bad

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I hunt for the hunt, if I get a big buck it is a bonus, I have always been able (so far) to get permission to hunt private property. One mistake a lot of folks make is looking for 100+ acre places to hunt. I ask permission on properties as small as 5 acres, the place I killed my buck this year was only 12 acres. Deer have no concept of private or public property and they cross, eat, and bed on all property. Get out and do some polite door knocking, you will be surprised. I agree that if you want a trophy buck, the easiest way to get one is pay for it, but you can still get one by doing some door knocking also. You can as mentioned lease or join a club, this will increase your odds without spending a fortune.

Gee, and I was always under the impression that Texas had some of the best hunting. Glad I'm in PA.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Well I am in Texas and there is a lot of public land where I hunt and I only hunt public land.
For me most of the fun is in the scouting working out where to put the stand learning the lay of the land where the deer bed and feed working out the trails. 99% of my hunting is done before the season starts the actual hunting is as I concider it only 1% of what I do. To go on a guided hunt would be nice but not to do any of the foot work is just not for me sorta takes all the fun out of it for someone to say go in that stand and at 7:45am a monster will come out over there and walk right past the stand. |
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Its all in what you want out of a hunt. I hunt public land, camp there, walk to my game, pull it out byhand and every head I have ever taken is a trophy. Nope, only one comes close to a "book" head, but everyone is MY trophy.
Theoly reason I would like to try a "trophy guided big dollar hunt" is to say I did it once. Other than that, I have better things to do with my money. I hear people talk about competition in the woods for game, believe me there is no competition there except in yourself. If you really need to put yourself against someone else, just look at the statistics in success for everyone. If your not at the average, you learn to get better or quit. Thepart of hunting I really enjoy, is that no matter how hard I try, how deep I go, no matter what shot or bullet, I always, ALWAYS feel like luck was for me when I succeed. There are no guarantees, its life at the most basic test you can find. |
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Greets,
Seems I agree with the general consensus. It depends on how much you want to put into, and get out of your hunt. If you got $$ and just want to go somewhere you know you'll get a big deer, go get a guided hunt. As for me ( oh just for the record YES if I had the $$ I would probably go on one at least once )I hunt all public land. Most of its owned by the logging companies, so technically its still private land, but it is open to the public. I dont get to do near as much scouting these days as I would like to, and that probably explains my lack of a deer or elk this year. The only trouble I can see in my area is the hunting pressure, there is millions of hunters everywhere!! Its getting so that even if you hike 2 miles in you are likely to come across at least one other hunting party. Just my uneducated opinion! Terry |
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Aussie, you must be in north Texas.Down in South Texas there aint no public land to find.Them ranches down there are all 100,000's of acres.I lived in Corpus and finally had to buy 300 acres out near Freer just to hunt.It was cheaper then leasing.Them big buck counties down there dont have any public land.Them Webb,Starr counties are awesome. Of course the king ranch has some giant brutes.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I have only hunted in KY & TN but haven't had any problem whatsoever. Hunting is alot cheeper than many leisure activities, golf for example. A buddy of mine spent more for one Big Bertha than I spent hunting all year long!

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
IT IS IF YOU WANT TO GET A "BIG" BUCK, BUT WHERE I HUNTED BACK HOME IT WAS MOSTLY STATE LAND AND WHEAT FIELDS. I TOOK A NICE TYPICAL 5X5 WHITETAIL WITH A 24 INCH SPREAD OFF OF A WHEAT FIELD ONE YEAR AND ALL IT COST ME WAS THE LISCENCE AND THE GAS MONEY.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Average hunting license = $25
Average weapon with ammo = $500 Average hunting aparrel = $200 Spending a day in the woods = PRICELESS! "Nocked, cocked & ready to rock" |
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
I could hunt for free but the fun i have in our club is well worth it. i started leaseing just a little tract beside my normal hunting ground. now i have 2000 acres leased and 12 members. we pay alot of money to poor boys but we think its worth it.

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
Not just the price of a guided hunt but license fees and application fees are starting to go through the roof as well. Guess we should just enjoy while we can, until it becomes corporate..

RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
L.B. find a good looking area where you would like to hunt and get out and explore your possibilitys. If a farmer owns the land Ask him if you could help pick rocks or unload hay maybe offer to keep trees cut off the fences. The one think farmers hate to see is everybody out on the opener looking for a place to hunt. You need to start in the spring. Also start by asking for permisson for a short period of time like a few days or a week .Let them get to know you. For me the hardest thing about being a farmer is seeing everybody else out hunting and having to much work to do to make it out myself.

I thought the same thing, I considered moving to Texas a few years back, glad i stayed in PA. |
RE: Hunting is for the rich!!!!!
There are HUGE bucks everywhere. There are whitetails big enough to make the book that live nearly in my garden. Just out of town (maybe 400 yards). All you have to do is spend time scouting where he spends his time beded, feeding, and what not, and you can harvest a boonie and drag him back to your house to be field dressed if you want.
