Well, even if they can, they must want some of these guys pretty bad. DNA tests are very expensive. I have a hard time believing they'd do tests like those on just anyone, unless they have better budgets than we think they do. Don't get me wrong, I wish they'd bust all the slobs, but I don't think it's very practical unless it could be done cheaply.

The reason I ask our DNR claim they can tell what county any deer in the state of michigan came from. The cost would be the factor since lately they don't have a pot to pee in. A gentic professor from Texas A&M email me this today.

I received a copy of your question and will attempt to answer it.
DNA microsatellite loci can be used to establish parentage and in
some cases identify individuals as to source population.
Nevertheless, it might be difficult to place individuals by county. It
would take a lot of work to first establish that deer populations
between counties actually differed with respect to these DNA
markers.

I belive it that our DNR is full of it. Just my 2cents......marty

Yes, in some areas of the country there is enough of a data base to go county by county, although it's not really that specific deer can't read the county line signs<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Mostly it's used to tell what area the deer wasn't killed in.
