RE: When do bucks shed their antlers

They shed in the really late winter months. Late Feb and into March. By late March all bucks will have shed thier antlers.

Depends on your location but here in Montana they started about 3 weeks ago as a friend of mine found a nice set of 4 pointers at the base of this fence where it had jumped it and on impact the antlers fell off, they still had the blood and hair on them. Even around the kabin here I only see flatheads now. To answer your question though, I doubt seriously if you would see any antlers on whitetail as they started dropping them around here about the second week in January. Bobby

Depends not only on the area, but other factors such as how hard the rut was on a buck and diet can play a role too. Here in MI, a cousin was dragging his buck out in the middle of December when the antler he was hanging onto came off. Another guy on the same property had the same experience. Last year, I watched deer with antlers in the middle of April. That's probably ususual though, not sure why - it was three different bucks too.

I would say that the overall average you could expect a buck sheding is middle of february unless your in extremly cold climates like NH,VT,NY where they will shed late dec to early jan. In the warmer climates they will keep them well into feb and march. Poor buck to doe ratios will make them drop early as will stress which is mostly cased by the poor ratios. Pressure will also will cause stress.

RE: When do bucks shed their antlers

It all depends on the deer. My neighbor breeds whitetails and often trades his deer with alot of other breeders in this part of the state. All of his deer will drop their antlers within 3 days of a certain date every year no matter what the weather conditions. I have seen numerous deer around here hold their antlers until april. These same deer still have their anters in april the following year even though it has been a much colder and harsher winter. I think every area is different.

my folks feed the deer all winter here in vermont, and into spring, starting in october. around christmas time, i think it was, i went out back put some apples out, and found the left side of a rack w/2 points on it. my father, who had been going up in the evening to watch them come in kept seeing a different 4 point come, saw that deer a couple of days after my find with his right side missing. two bucks, same week, missing antlers. around the first of the year. an old-timer told dad that all the deer lose their antlers by the 10th of jan., but i don't believe it.
