freakin me out!
The first thing i do after getting a deer is to cut off it's tongue. I just CAN"T STAND those pictures of a majestic, regal whitetail with its tongue hangin' out of its mouth like it's been on a 3 day drinking bender!!!
Am i the only guy that does this? ALOT of people seem to , like, take pride in the tongue hanging out thing when i mention it to them. yeah, you can tell it's the off-season but i just wanted to vent. see ya! moose[X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][:@]! |
RE: freakin me out!
i just stick it back in the mouth, no big deal.

RE: freakin me out!
When I harvest my first big buck, I plan on taking pictures with the tongue inside and out. It does look kind of goofy with it hanging out, but it's good to have a laugh and then put it back in. I wouldn't mount a deer like that.

RE: freakin me out!
personally , it doesnt bother me , i dont even pay attention to it.
|
RE: freakin me out!
was told once by someone that takes alot of wildlife pictures you should always stick the tongue back in and try and clean off visible blood for the best pictures
|
RE: freakin me out!
i always stick the tongue back in. if the deer is already frozen, i will cut it off i guess. never ran into that yet. pictures do look better w/o a tonge
|
RE: freakin me out!
That's something that never crossed my mind. I have noticed it in some of my pictures, but it doesn't bother me.
|
RE: freakin me out!
Stick the tongue back in add a sprig of evergreen as it's last supper and say a thank you prayer to the animal for giving up it's spirit to you.
|
RE: freakin me out!
Not taking anything away from any ones comments. However, In my perspective when harvesting your game ie:deer; and then being overly concerned about its tong hanging out is some what of a moot point.
Does any one patch up the hole in its side, or make sure not to take a picture of the deer with a four foot slice in its abdomend after field dressing it. The deer as passed and all said and done (dead). Other wise start hunting with a camera. On the other hand if this practice completes your true respect of this animal I can inturn respect your concerns. |
RE: freakin me out!
i find if i can it is best to do the pic. before i gut it a lot less blood
|
RE: freakin me out!
Usually I will put the tongue back in before I take the picture and like bob d said, I try to remove the visable blood from it as well.
|
RE: freakin me out!
if you are going to frame the picture and hang it on your wall its a good idea to put its tongue back in its mouth, as far as cutting its tongue completely out is kinda going overboard (demented actually) but to each his own.
|
RE: freakin me out!
take the pic as the animal dropped, what is this hollywood? |
RE: freakin me out!
i've heard a lot of people say that u should put the tounge back in the mouth for better pictures and out of respect for the animal, but i personally never think about it when i'm takin pics because i'm ussually too excited about the kill to be thinkin about the toungue.

RE: freakin me out!
thanks for the replies. the only reason i do it is out of respect for the animal, i think they are cool critters and to me it just does not look right to have it's tongue all covered with dirt from the drag hanging out (especially in pics) . i know from talking to alot of non -hunters(NOT anitis) that a deer in the back of a truck dosnt bother them, but they seem to be really turned off by the tongue thing.
I think it ranks right up there with the genius who thought that a deer head mount with an arrow sticking in it was the hieght of decor...TACKY. t roy, i might be a little twisted, but demented? man , you hurt my feelins....:D see ya moose |
RE: freakin me out!
Respect of the animal kingdom is of upmost importance. Out of respect you should place the tongue back in the mouth. But cleaning the blood is something I consider overboard.
|
RE: freakin me out!
Some websites will NOT post your picture if it has a lot of blood in it.
And yes I do cover the bullet hole and gut cut and wipe up any blood that will distract from the picture. |
RE: freakin me out!
And yes I do cover the bullet hole |
RE: freakin me out!
I just put the tongue in the mouth and then snap away.
but i could see how someone would like to cover all of the blood up, personally I like my pics to have some blood in them....but that is just me... |
RE: freakin me out!
take the pic as the animal dropped, what is this hollywood? I want to remember them for what they were "before they dropped" I will put my bow over the hole, I will hide the tongue, I will do my best to take photos that capture more than a "dead - bloody animal". The memory and image of the hunt that can be captured in a good picture has too much value to throw into a bloody pickup truck. JMO |
RE: freakin me out!
I agree it makes for better pictures but I really don't think it is essential. Again like anything with hunting it is all preference by the person who took the animal. I have them both ways in my photo album and really don't get distracted by the sight of the tongue, blood or hole. It certainly has nothing to do with my lack of respect either, just never realized it or so on.

RE: freakin me out!
Good arguments are made from both sides, but I really don't see the big deal in showing the tongue, some blood, or the entrance hole. Nobody has a right to tell you what to do with your deer, although we all have the right to determine how our own kills are photographed.

RE: freakin me out!
This may sound gross but the tongue of a deer is actually very tasty when cooked of course. It's not enough for a meal but its good for a hunter to eat as much of their game as possible in my opinion. So i eventually always cut out the tongue. But for pictures the tongue has never really bothered me. I know some guys think its tacky though.

RE: freakin me out!
never really bothered me
