RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
I hunt out on Horicon Marsh. The first I see I almost have to take. If its a doe or a buck. There was a doe that came through with a buck chasing her. My dad took the doe because it was a young buck. I wouldnt mind getting a doe or a buck.

RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
I'd say that it would be a rare parcel of land, just about ANYWHERE in this country, that shooting does would hurt the deer herd!
In fact, many areas would do well to close "buck" season altogether for a couple of years!!!!! Oh no!!!! ......Did I really write that out loud? help! Help! The old died-in-the-wool East Texuns are getting a rope ready to hang me!!!!!!:D |

this was posted by 835ERIC and I thought it was quite interesting and pertinent to this thread.
We talk a lot about shooting doe on this site. I wanted to mention two studies that show why we want to shoot doe if you want quality bucks. The first was done Pennsylvania Game Commision. Their studies showed that doe in over-populated under-nourished areas doe gave birth to more female fawn then buck fawn while well-nourished doe gave birth to more buck fawn than doe fawn. In other words, you will get more bucks in the future with a healthy doe heard. I apploligize for not giving credit to the people who did the next study. It was one I read a while back and can not find it now. Basicaly what it showed was if a mature doe (with fawns) was shot the fawn had more of a tendancy to stay in that same home range, and had a better survival rate. But if a fawn became mature without loosing the mother doe the offspring would be forced into new territory and had a smaller chance at survival. So, by shooting mature doe you would actually have thier offspring around to replace them and if one of the offspring was a buck, you would have a better chance of that buck making that ground his home turf. Just two more reasons to shoot mature doe that I don't think had been mentioned for a while if at all |
RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
Kill does? You bet! Texas allows five deer per license, two bucks and three antlerless.
Lease I hunt REQUIRES a specific number of does killed, depending on the wildlife biologist's annual count. Last season, the pasture that me and a partner had allowed one trophy buck, two eight or nine point management bucks, and we were REQUIRED to kill eight does by contract, eventually upped to ten. You have to bring in guests to kill the additional does. |
RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
If you are not killing does, you are killing your future bucks without ever pulling the trigger!

RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
Well said Taz!
"Killing a doe, kills 3 deer," is pure bull hockey! I just wish those that run our lease and hunt in our region would wise up to this fact! |
RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
Gentlemen, I'm 60 years old, a transplant from wisconsin that lives in Alabama, and I will shoot a Doe now that it is legal to do so. (One Doe and One Buck per day in Alabama). However you have to find them to shoot them.
I have not shot anything in three years...since I got my medium 11 pointer. No Does either. I've seen plenty of them but I was too far back in the woods to drag one out, also I did not want to clean it either. I guess as you get older you go out to hunt to be at peace with yourself and enjoy the surroundings. If I see a Doe close to our parking area I'll bust it, because I'll have help when the guys come back to the parking area. Also I usually hunt during the week when there are only about one or two of us on the lease. I have four tree climbers but have only been up one this year. I guess I've had an Eppiffiney and would rather sit on the ground. I've realized that I'm not that invinceable any more, but I still enjoy being out in the woods. As for the orginal question of "Does anyone not shoot Does"...Yes I'll bust one when the young people and there Dads are at the camp because we get them all together to drag the doe out....make it a big event for the old fart. Also we have some older teenagers that can clean & field dress a deer in about five minutes and quarter it in another five minutes. I do not ask but I guess they have been trained to work at night while on the run. All for now Brothers and hunt well. |
RE: Does any one not shoot does ?
If its in season, its fair game for me:D Too many does is a bad thing anyway.
