largest deer you've ever seen on public land...
I am asking this because this morning I went out to the highway to take a look at the herd of elk that comes down from the mountain every time it snows and when we looked on the other side of the road there were 50 deer up there. We turned our spotting scopes around to check them out and there was a 5x5 typical that was at least 35" wide! He had really deep forks and heavy beams, dang where was he during the season?

i am not sure if you are familiar with popeye but we watched him for many years on the winter grounds
his sheds were recovered and turned into mounts year after year and to my knowledge he died of old age
he was not radio collared or anything but he was believed to live out his whole life on public land
he is the deer on the far left

The largest deer I've ever seen is on my wall. A 6x6 about 27'' wide out of Wyoming. Drawing a less than 2% chance tag was the real key. I'm now in search of a bigger one. Even bought horses so I can pack into the high country. I'd like to make contact with other packers who like to travel. Now I live in N.M. right in the heart of big elk country(Gila Wilderness). We need a forum for Wilderness hunt lovers too.

I saw an 11 point in N/W IL @ Mathiessen State Park.
I could have used his rack for handle bars it was so wide!
Anyway, it was an antlerless only hunt, so of course, he just walked up under my stand, stayed for a while and then quietly walked away.
Never knew I was there.
